So why did he have to die so soon?

In what way did he seem like "a big main character" to you?

The fact that he was at the start of the series, he looked like one of the few humans who could destroy Alucard. Awaiting the attacks...

He died so quick because his religion is a sham and there was never any God to protect him.

anderson didnt die. ever. till the end, of course, but in OVA terms, he's still alive.

He died 2nd to last episode of the OVA series [Technically speaking he died in OVA 8 when he stabbed himself in the heart with the nail of Helena] But out of 10 OVA Episodes [which spanned between 45 minutes to over an hour in length] Anderson was featured in more or less all of them
