I liked it but I expected something more. I haven´t read the novel but I would like to read it. I didn´t like Foster performance.

hey, you're a Dawn of the Dead fan too!

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

This movie sucked so bad and is definitely one of the worst i have seen over the past year.

The plot was stupid. First Russel Crowe is always one step behind the guy and then all of a sudden he has this girl Maria working for him to take him down. If this was a setup all along, why did he pursue Eric the whole time before? He knew, he was gonna get to him eventually by using Maria. Made no sense.

And what was up with Lori on the rollercoaster? Did she see the cop cars or why did she start freaking out?

The ending scene was so incredibly stupid as well. Make sure the girl drowns while you are only waving a paddle around. Then, when it's too late you can still jump in and get her. LOL.

The Titanic-esque shot of him crying over her dead body, then letting her sink into the water actually made me laugh.

And why exactly did Eric kill his mother? Did he kill his father too? That scene was shot so awkward, that I couldn't see what was going on.

Another thing: In the end what happened? Does Eric go back to jail? For what? Because they THINK he killed Lori?

The script was so bad. Didn't even bother to add any back story to any of the characters. Who were we supposed to sympathize with?? Certainly not the killer and the suicidal b1tch. But I didn't give a sh!t about Russel Crowe either because we didn't get to know anything bout his character.

A total mess....

I agree with most of your answers to dxben99's questions, but I wanted to point out one thing: they stole the boat, they didn't rent it, implying that the lake was virtually deserted at the time they were there.

The only thing I don't understand is Maria's motivation. If she liked him at the detention camp, how could they convince her later to trap him? And trap him into what? Attempted murder? They were going to let a kid like that put herself in mortal danger to snag a would-be killer who's record has already been expunged? (Which resets his legal status back to zero just like anyone never convicted of a crime.) There doesn't seem to be any legality nor constitutionality underlying that little plot device.

So for me the whole set-up angle didn't work, although it created the best scene in the movie, IMO: Lori becoming upset on the rollercoaster. I love skillful misdirection like that.

I wish they had made Maria's level of participation and timing with respect to the set-up more clear in the story. I'm having a tough time connecting those dots logically. How do you think she fit in?

reply

Maria was a set up from the beginning. She just happened to be his preference and the only girl to come through the door. The detective didn't seem to care about any of his rights. It was pretty much entrapment. Of course if he tried to kill her then it wouldn't matter what the detective did. But his lawyer would have a good case. She was never really in danger because they had like 50 cops around that place and he killed women by strangling them. So they would have plenty of time to stop him but they would be screwed if he stabbed or shot her.

Thanks a lot for the spoiler alert! Good grief, could you not have at least stated that before you detailed so much of the film? Now that I know the ending, thanks to you..............

While I think he was using Marie from the beginning. He was probably following him to make sure that the didn't kill someone along the way.Or at least trap him if he did.

He killed his mother because she found his trophy from when he killed that girl. She was going to call the police on him when he killed her.

He could be in jail at the end awaiting trial about Lori. Even if it looked like she drowned. He still could have held her under or any number of things.

I'm 50/50 on whether I liked the movie or not but some of your questions are a bit silly and easily answered:

1) Yes he knew he would get him EVENTUALLY but he still wanted to follow him throughout and keep an eye on him; he didn't know what Eric was going to do between getting out and meeting up with Maria

2) Yes, Lori did see the cop cars and/or cops. When she eventually runs down to the beach you can hear her yelling how it's all a trap and then tells the cops to come out. With a bird's eye-view from the rollercoaster, it's only logical to assume she saw something

3) Ok that I agree with, if he wanted to save her then jump in right away!!

4)Why he killed his parents is explained by Crowe to Lori while they're in the cop car at the amusement park. He tells her that his parents found out what he had done to the other girls (in one of the flashbacks you see his mom confront him with the red ribbon thing then go pick up the phone - presumably to call the cops) so he killed her then yes, killed his father two; I thought that was pretty obvious; his father comes home, walks into the kitchen, there are sounds of a struggle, a shot, someone collapses and Eric comes out with a bow...

5) Yes he goes back to jail. What the other poster already mentioned with them being seen everywhere together, Eric's a convicted serial murderer and with no alibi or plausible defense, the DA had it easy to throw him back in jail. And what Crowe says at the end too; he knows Eric didn't kill Lori but he also knows Eric belongs in jail because sooner rather than later Eric will kill again - you could see he was unstable throughout the film

In the end, yeah, I didn't sympathise with any character either. It was a 'meh' sort of movie for me

yeah, when i made this thread 18 months ago it was like a 7.5 or something. I personally think a 5.6 is still a little too high, although in theory on a ten scale that should be only slightly above average, IMDB's ratings for bigscreen films are skewed high, terrible movies get in the five range.

reply

I think it wasn't that bad, it was more of a psychological drama, seeing things from the point of view of the serial killer, and the audience gets to emphatize with him, not many movies can do that, and do it wellSource:Movie Reviews - Tendernesshttp://moviereviews.noskram.com/2009/09/movie-reviews-for-tenderness
