What scared Russel in the back of his car?

I watched this scene twice and still could figure out what scared the detective. Was the rattle I heard part of the music or something in the car?

When he saw the cross he gave eric hanging from his rear view mirror he thought Eric might be in the back seat waiting to shoot him

Yes the source of the actual fright emanated from the front of the car. He jumped out thinking someone might be in the back of the car.🐭
