Great movie, but only for adults

This is a smart little thriller. It's only suitable for educated adults though. The suspense is psychological and will require thinking about the meaning of the scenes and the story. It's slow-paced, but very thrilling. And quite sad, but in a meaningful way.

Great acting from all three main characters. Sophie Traub especially is someone we're going to hear more about.

I beg to differ, my 6 year old enjoyed it more than I did.

That's what happens when you fall asleep.

Adults? Ánd educated as well? Why? Wouldn't they understand the story if they weren't?

The film is for 12 years and older in the Netherlands. I notice it is X-rated in US. Why? Because breasts of a woman in a hospital bed were shown for like 10 seconds?

Salt for example is 13PG in US and 12 (not PG) over here. But Tenderness is X-rated in US? An action film with lots of killings, blood etc. is lower rated than Tenderness? Beats me.

LarissaXX, our cultural standards are a bit odd but that's kind of off topic.

Going back to what the OP said, I totally agree about this not being for the Saw crowd.

But I kind of resent the "adults" part of your statement. Not all young people have the attention spans of fruit flies and hate anything that makes them think. You can stereotype about the young as much as you can the old.

But looking at many of the poor reviews for this movie I was frustrated, as most of them seem to focus on the lack of anything "happening". It's one thing to genuinely dislike a part of a film's production, but saying something is lesser than because it isn't fast paced enough just means you don't appreciate what's going on and it isn't your taste. It's not like something about the production was bad you know? It's supposed to be slow-paced. Things happen, just not obviously.

That was not what I wrote. I was reacting to the person who said you had to be adult (ánd educated) to understand this movie. I was pointing out that IMHO that is not the case for this movie.

it's rated r in the us. movies in the us showing lots of gore and nudity are commonly rated r. this is the problem with europeans commenting on america. they don't know as much about it as they believe.

it's a popular misconception, reinforced by sensationalist idiots, that american film industry has prudish standards. not really. it's similar all around the world. for example, stanley kubrick's film a clockwork orange was heavily criticized in england for its violent content, whereas it generated less of a panic in america.

i hope people, especially europeans would brighten up. thank you.

reply

Even a French film like Amélie is rated R in America. And why? Because of a scene on TV with nude people. A scene that was only there for a few seconds.
So yes, I think Americans are prudish.

reply

Larissa, you're absolutely right. There is a LARGE majority in the US that are prudish and they freak when they see a penis, breast, or vagina in reality or on camera. They also freak when you chat about sex or kink; UBER-lame if you ask me.

I don't think the nude breast at the end of the movie was what landed it an R rating, since the shot was VERY brief and wasn't the focal point of the shot, it wouldn't have qualified it for an R rating.

I saw the tail end of the movie, but there some F-bombs in the movies and enough of them are considered "strong/graphic" language in the US. Maybe I need to be in Europe; there's very little that offends me.

Look how they freak out over nipple slips. A nipple! I find the fake breasts falling out of dresses more annoying than a nipple slip. Why are those plastic breasts made so big? Nothing sexy about round big balls. I don't know a Dutch man who finds that attractive. They rather have small real breasts than fake ones. And women who have really small breasts and have fake ones take only 1 or 2 sizes bigger.. I never saw breasts like I have seen on American television. Ever! (yes, porn stars.. but the women on American television aren't porn stars but they definitely look like them IMHO)

reply

The MPAA gives ratings and those ratings do not reflect what Americans think. My parents let me watch R rated moves when I was 6 (The first one was robocop).

It's definitely true that Americans are uncomfortable with young children watching adults have sex on screen.

reply

it is not rated x, or nc-17 here...
it is Rated R for disturbing violent and sexual content, and language.

reply

And what does R mean? I thought it meant 18 and older but I suppose I am wrong then?

reply

"And what does R mean? I thought it meant 18 and older but I suppose I am wrong then?"

R means 'restricted', i.e. any persons below the age of 17 have to be accompanied by an adult in order to be allowed admission to the theater.

reply

Okay then.. a 16-year-old can't see this film on his own then? Unbelievable!

reply

Yep, strange but true ;) I would rate it PG-13, I don't see any reasons for R rating.
It's a great movie, BTW :)

reply

I think maybe some people are conflating an Adult-rated movie with it being actually mature.."Bambi Does Dallas " would be adult-rated material without being very mature..you cite a brief bare-breasts scene, but without that any such movie would still be adult, murderers, violence, it's not the Muppets or the Wiggles..the kiddies are suggested put to bed.
Is it possible that you just had an edge to grind about America being more uptight than the EU ?
Some of America might be, obviously, America is a country which runs at more than one speed re religion and morality, whereas Europe is more consistantly all liberal and debauched.. America might be the origin of countless religious kook sects, PTL tv evangelists,Bible-belt,Mormons, all of this nonsense, but, if you are going to watch porn, LA porn is way better than EU porn, which tends to be like the sexual equivalent of the Eurovision Song Contest..all fking weirdo without being particularly good sex.

GREAT MOVIE FOR NO ONE......BLEAK..DEPRESSING....SO ON ANS SO ON.

reply

I read the book when I was about 16 so no I wouldn't say the movie was only for adults...or educated adults. I understood the book fully and it actually made me cry a bit, the movie was very well done as well.

reply

I agree it does require some thinking, and certainly not for kids with the subject matter, and you strangely see things from the serial killer's point of view, and emphatize with him, not many movies can pull that offSource:Movie Reviews - Tendernesshttp://moviereviews.noskram.com/2009/09/movie-reviews-for-tenderness

reply

Its not at all suprising. The killing is very brutal and being a teenager it can effect someone emotionally. - Its not a fun fair. Its harsh moments of how real life could be. - i dont recommend 14-16 old persons to view this -

reply

I actually agree with the OP that this movie is more suitable for adults. I'd hate to have some emotionally immature teenager watch it and go out there to try to find a serial killer for herself. I don't believe the rating has anything to do with the quick flash of breast at the end, but more to do with the mature content of the movie. Not for the easily manipulated, that's for sure! But, still a thought-provoking, intelligent, well-acted - and disturbing - film.

reply

It was good. Not enough explosions and "YEEEHAA" for ADHD Americans so hence the bad rating here.

reply

i was thinking exactly the opposite, i'm 43 yrs, and no focking idiot should waste my time with 16 yrs crap.

edit, and the stupid makers of this movie didn't get the existential meaning in the novel, specially the concept of the absurd, which led them to change the ending from an accident to a suicide, the uneducated fans fell into it. they also didn't give any damn for what was going through the teenager's mind, maybe to make it appeal to teenage empty minded viewers.

i mostly will not be able to answer your reply, since marissa mayer hacked my email, no notification
