Letters

So... Helene wrote the two letters? Did she knew about the other woman? I'm confused. Help, please!

reply

I am with you - I am confused! I think Helene only wrote the last letter; the girl gave him the first one at the bath. What I think the movie didn't explain was how Helene found out about the girl in the first place. I may have to watch it again to get it, but I doubt that will help. Generally, when I don't understand a movie, there is a book that it is based on and I have to read the book and then watch the movie again. I guess this is one of those movies.

Sorry I was no help, but sometimes knowing someone else out there is feeling the same does help a little...

If you become enlightened about this movie, please email me at [email protected] - I doubt I will get to read the book on this one until well into summer.

It was a beautiful movie to look at, if not to understand.

Thanks anyway! You're right. It feels nice to know that someone's as confused as I am. :-) I'll try to read the book then, and if I find out, I'll let you know. I hate when this happens, when I'm left with questions about something in a movie. At least it was visually stunning...

I think I've found a thread that answers our questions: "I don't get the ending... any help?". Go there.

The Chinese third wife did not write the letter to him saying come back or i'll die Helen did, he was so blinded by beauty he thought it was 3rd wife who then put it in his hand at the bath house. When he returned helen could tell something was different and became suspicious after he told her the story of how the third wife discovered Silk and she wrote a letter in english again returned to the translator at the brothel a second time who could write it in Japanese for her, Whether she and the brothel owner had discussed what happened with her husband is unknown.

i think u got confused here. The Chinese 3rd wife wrote "come back or i'll die letter". She put it in his hand, so obviously, lol.

Helen wrote the other one.

It's a strange idea that Helene would write a letter to her husband, making him think that the Japanese women he met, had writen it.

You're also confused about the story Herme was telling his wife. He told her the mythical story of a Chinese queen discovering silk--he was not talking about the woman he met in Japan, who also happened to be ethnically Chinese. Helene did NOT write the first letter.
