To those who think this film is beautiful.......

Yes, I agree.... the cinematagraphy and the scenery are quite superb... BUT... the story is downright UGLY.... this is a story about a married man having an affair with a woman EVERYTIME when he went on a business trip after he met her. And EVERYTIME when he came back from the trip he would be "extra nice" to his wife at home who knew nothing about the other woman. He would make love with the wife and "worked so hard" to build her a nice garden.
And when his business associates suggested that it's too risky and not financially worthy to trade with the same foreign company and decided to move on to trade with another country, this love-struck man strongly opposed to it, AND his poor silly wife even encouraged him to be brave and supported him a 100%... so, this man went back to the same foreign land and looked for THE woman and hoping for some sex too. But the "beautiful exotic/erotic woman" who read his mind, brought him another "lady" to offer to him, like saying " sorry, you can't have me, 'cause I'm already taken by the big-boss, and you are too coward to steal me from him, so, here's a woman for replacement". And guess what? The man took this total female stranger and had sex with her, no hesitation at all!!!!
If this man wanted to be unfaithful; I'm not so narrow-minded, but, maybe if his marriage was on the rock or if he was forced to married his wife without a choice, then I could have understand.
So, yeah, some people think this film is beautiful...... HA !

I can understand both points of view here, but I have to say I really didn't like this movie, largely because I couldn't stand the main character. As Meansnow said, it was bad enough when he became so infatuated with the Japanese girl while his wife sat at home waiting for him, while he continued to risk his life because he was so desperate to see a girl he'd never even spoken to. But then for him to just jump into bed with another girl because he couldn't have the first one, to me just showed total weakness of character. And then of course his wife dies, and he suddenly realises what an idiot he's been. But his poor wife has already spent her short life waiting for him to wake up. So yeah, this film made me kind of mad, in case you hadn't figured that out.

Can something ugly never be seen as beautiful?

Take a look at Romeo and Juliet for example. If you take it at face value it's about two teenagers basically rebelling against their parents, saying they found true love in such a short period of time, and then killing themselves. I wouldn't call that beautiful, yet it is in a way.

Now, obviously Silk is not even close to Romeo and Juliet, but the same argument could apply.

Beauty is a matter of opinion, and to me it is not one dimensional. From my perspective (and I'm a woman by the way) I see a man torn from reality, stuck on unrealistic fantasies, and while being so looses the true love of his life, his dear, sweet wife who through one last effort expresses the way she feels in a beautiful letter. He doesn't realize how much he truly loves her, until it is too late.

What he did to his wife is by no means acceptable, it is down right cruel. However, the story itself is beautiful, just in a very sorrowful way.

It seems like you didn't even watch the movie since your summary is completely wrong on a lot of your key facts.

I mean, aside from the puritanical view you're taking, you just don't even seem to understand the movie.
