What a piece of crap

What a banal boring heap of junk this was. And what a painful task it was trying to sit through it. Nothing actually happened. And when something did happen I didn't care because they didn't give a me a reason to. Keira Knightley's character for example.. consisted of the following: wants child, likes flowers. .. That's her for 1 and a half hours.. wanting a child and liking flowers. So when she dies the only thing the story loses.. is a character who wants a child and likes flowers. And that goes for all the one-dimensional characters. In fact, the main character doesn't even have that.. he just has likes pretty girls.. goes to Japan.. comes back from Japan.. goes to Japan.. comes back from Japan.. goes to Japan.. .. .. comes back from Japan. And there's your film. Throw in some tiring repetitive chords on the piano.. and.. congratulations: you've wasted a lot of money on a dia-show with trite-filled narration and a bunch of lifeless puppets stumbling over an awful boring horribly paced script.

If you like this movie.. you're wrong.

Heheh, your comment made me laugh a bit.
During the first hour or so, I found myself thinking 'geeze this is quite boring, seems to be going on for ages and going nowhere' -- but then i got over the fact that it was slow-paced and used this to err well, take in the cinematography, which was really stunning.
I think that would be the most salvageable thing of this whole film, because in regards to plot and character development, it was definitely poor.

I agree totally. This entire movie was boring, and I'm sorry but the endless sex scenes were not needed at all. Nothing could make that terrible movie better after the hole it dug itself.

That's because you are not looking deep enough. If anyone has studied culture, psychology, mythology, or literature you would look for symbols.

flowers=Fertility
school children= fertility
endless sex scenes= Show couple cannot conceive a child
Silk worm eggs= value of fertility
Mistress: Fruitfulness- represents what men want in a woman.
Helene: young attractive woman who cannot conceive but loves everything that represents what she cannot do.
"She is her"
The letter written was a farewell but the writer is not who you think. He has always been in love with his wife. " I need to give him something to come back to"

onegirlrev, I agree with you a 100%. It was a beautiful movie. I can't believe ppl didn't understand it and are calling it boring. :(

Picked up on the symbols, doesn't make it suddenly interesting.

The existence of symbolism doesn't automatically mean something is good. I never understand why people make these conclusions.

If symbolism is used to support an interesting story and good character development it is well used. If that's all you're clinging to as a claim to quality, you're easily impressed.
