An OK Movie But Lee Was Trying to Mimic Tyler Perry Too Much...

I really enjoyed the movie but it just seemed at times like this was Malcolm D. Lee trying to channel some of Tyler Perry's mojo. He really messed up what should have been a really good movie by making the usual extreme and unsubtle statements with the characters like we always see in black movies these days. The only thing that kept this from being a total Perry mess was that it stuck to being a comedy and didn't get bogged down by all the melodramatics of Tyler Perry's bs soap operas.

Roscoe Sr. was overly stern with Roscoe jr in general because he hadn't been home to visit despite the fact that Roscoe jr had been unappreciated and almost neglected in favor of Clyde. Dad should have been the one to reach out or at least try to be more understanding. He was basically turned into one of the villains of the movie.

The rivalry between Roscoe and Clyde became too silly. I enjoyed most of it but it became too heavy-handed for two adults to roll around the house and wreck everything ( I was really hoping to see a nice smorgasbord of soul food like all the other movies where food is a main part of the movie haha Instead all the food ends up on the floor and the dog).

Bianca was turned into an ubervillain Tyler Perry-style. Bitchy, self-centered, selfish, high-maintanence, conniving....did I leave anything out? Lee obviously didnt. Even when it looked like she was starting to bond with the rest of the womenfolk in the kitchen, Lee still decides to make her the main villain. It would have been nice if they had included her as a new member of the family in the end, instead of being jettisoned from the car like unwanted baggage. I don't mean to be a killjoy since Im sure alot of people prefer to have someone to hate when they're watching a movie but this was supposed to be a movie about family and I think the way Bianca's character was ultimately dealt with was a bad example for a movie thats supposed to be about family and fellowship. There should have been some kind of conversion or revelation on her part that would make her a changed woman and make everyone embrace and accept her. Lee was too concerned with trying to bring Roscoe and Lucinda together, so of course they have to make the third wheel of the love triangle a negative force to justify his attraction to his old flame.

Movie ain't nothing like Tyler perry. Tyler perry movies involve big real life situation type of story with little comedy. This movie mostly comedy and theres no situation in this movie that is serious....

That's what I said, stupid. Read the post again. What makes is resemble a Tyler Perry movie is the stock characters and typical villainess role of Bianca.

And there's plenty of comedy in TP's movies. Just that alot of it is more minstrelsy and not as funny as this movie.
