His dad was cold

I think his family was pretty hard on him, but i liked them all. i understand his feelings towards his dad. He favored the other child.

reply

Yeah, I was thinking about the 50 inch TV. No one in the house could enjoy the TV just because the father has some kind of grudge against his son? Nice role model there....

Roscoe is a grown man, he should be allowed to live his life without being emotionally black mailed.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

it seems that his father couldn't come to terms with the fact that the son with his whole name (his junior) didn't stay around like his other son/nephews and daughter/nieces. also that he didnt come around after he made it big on tv. i assume it hurt his father even more to know that he abbreviated his real name to rj and made his middle name his last name therefore concealing who he really was and where he came from. but the whole point to this was that when roscoe came back around he was still bull-headed to him (saying my grandson's father) instead of saying my son, not even a simple "thanks" for the tv even though he didnt want it, and even still flaunting clyde's success as the greatest thing in front of him. while i believe in respecting elders, roscoe had every right to blow up at him the way he did. it was long overdue. the only thing i applaud the father for doing was not treating the grandson badly due to the resentment of his son. finally the mother (who was quiet throughout the whole ordeal) im glad she got the courage to say the little bit she did, which was long overdue as well.

It's MY OPINION and I WILL post it if i want 2 !!

reply

I agree with shoneydip. And it wasn't just the resentment of his father, it was his whole family! I think they all(except for his mother) treated him like an outsider! So its understandable to see why he left home & changed his name...not like his family really cared about his success. B/c after all he's accomplished, they're still all stuck on clyde & how he has a bunch of car dealerships!

reply

I just watched this movie with my wife and my Mother in Law (both white) and we agreed that while his anger was justified, it is also something that he maybe should have done alot sooner, and perhaps just speaking with his Father and telling him how he felt. However, these things have a way of working out that works for the best. The reconciliation between the family was beautiful though.

Am I Insane? YES!!

reply

Absolutely. Except perhaps for his Mom, his family was a bunch of jealous scumbags in denial. The family reconciliation may have seemed heart warming, but it was empty since it was so one sided. The family was already staying with their old ways when Roscoe came back to settle affairs. If it were up to them, they would have just sat and stewed for the rest of their pitiful lives, knowing inside that Roscoe had become so successful because he found the strength to leave them nine years before. Bianca had the right idea when she grabbed Roscoe's hand and prevented him from accepting that lame apology from Clyde The Loser! Roscoe had become much better off without them and should have stuck to that formula!

As an African American maybe I can explain the families reaction to Roscoe by saying that in a lot of black families it is considered bad form to think you're high and mighty and better than your roots. Because Roscoe was in the "big time" Hollywood scene and didn't return home much (though I admit I could also see why he didn't--again speaking from experience sometimes family doesn't make it hard to talk to them or connect if they even suspect you think you're better than them)they thought he was making money and success more important than family and background.

reply

I would have disowned the whole family. And never talked to them again they treated him like crap.

reply

Couldn't have said it better!
I noticed the same. Loser family!
He is an Amazing Man, but bcause they are so jealous petty small minded, they never aknowledge or even see him even when he has his own Tv Show and hes a Big name
And they treated his gf bad too
If I were him, I wouldve left early on too.

reply

@Shoneydip- His father treating him different began before he was even an adult. It began when they were young, especially when both Clyde and Roscoe were racing in order to get Lucinda. It was wrong that Roscoe got a beating and Clyde didn't. If that aint favortisim I don't know what is. They both should have gotten the same punishment. That's why Roscoe went away.

reply

it doesnt get much colder tan james earl jones. i swear his expressions hardly change from movie to movie.

reply

The father felt rejected by Roscoe. He was his namesake and chose to change his name to RJ Stevens.Clyde was a freaking orphan. They probably showed him more attention because he was alone in the world. It makes perfect sense that the father would go easier on him than he would on his own children. This is especially true since Clyde was slick and would bring up his dead parents (one of whom may have been Roscoe Sr.'s brother or sister, when he was in trouble.

The two older siblings were old enough to understand that, but Roscoe, being the baby of the family, became jealous because he had to share his parents attention with Clyde. The brother and sister whipped on Roscoe because he was their little brother. There is nothing odd about that. Perhaps the dynamics of a black extended family simply don't translate to white folks who only grew up seeing their grand parents only on Christmas.

reply

His dad was cold. I don't think roscoe should have been the one to have to make the first move either by coming back and giving that heartfelt speech. I personally wouldve been through with them after getting beat up by my brother and sister and emotionally abused by my father. The only one i would've kept in contact with was my mother. I mean hell, even after roscoe told his dad how he felt, he couldn't even see him off before he left. What an a%$hole

reply

I would have said F'em. I might come back when the old man died to console Mom, but they wouldn't have seen me. I come from a large family and whiel there is a variety of characters, nothing quit elike that has happened and we've had some disagreements.

reply

hooper-xxx, Roscoe Jr didn't reject Roscoe Sr, it was the other way around. The father crafts the relationship with the child; Senior molded distance, neglect and mistreatment into their relstionship from a very early age. He didn't leave because his brother and sister punked him, and he didn't leave because Clyde was a manipulative jackass. Those were things that he didn't like, but accepted. Note his exchange with Clyde when he brings up the competitive nonsense at the picnic table.

He left because his father was unwilling to father HIM. The other siblings as you noted were older and didn't need the attention that they had already gotten. But Senior saved all his love and affection for their orphan. Senior is the only family member who exempted Clyde from the rules. Otis was tough and hard; Betty was nasty; Reggie was a scheming little butt; Lucinda was sweet; and Mama was Mama. Their personalities made no dramatic shifts when they dealt with RJ and Clyde. Senior trampled on Roscoe's spirit like dirt under his boot, and looked after and reared Clyde like the plant rooted in that same dirt. It does NOT make "perfect sense" to victimize someone else just because life has been cruel to you. RJ himself is guilty of this by not being more involved with Jamal. If RJ hadn't left, I honestly feel Senior would have found something else to be upset with him about. It fit his pattern, which is why Roscoe left in the first place.

reply

My brother is favored by my mother. Happens in all families

reply

I think I would have told the old man I'll come back when you're dead and not before.

reply

Yes it does happen and it sucks. Especially when you work 3 jobs to buy a peice of poo poo car and your sibling get a brand new car and money to help with rent even though siblings re 1 year apart.

reply

Yeah. Watching it on tv now. The father never addresses the source of Roscoe's feelings. Why come, Daddy Jenkins???

reply

sometimes families need to be hard on people. It makes them stay in tune and responsible.

reply

There was no doubt he was treated like the red headed step child. Monique just played up to the obnoxious big sister. Clyde definitely was able to manipulate Papa Jenkins. They really did not show how Otis treated him as a child.

When Roscoe came home he expected his family to line up and kiss his ass because of his fame, but his family still seen him as the scared, immature little boy and would not accept his arrogance.

But overall, Papa Jenkins was very stern, cold, and distant with him even as a child.

reply

I didn't blame Roscoe for leaving for 9 years and not coming back. I think his family was jealous because they treated him like the black sheep, and resented that they're black sheep had made a life without them. However, I think Roscoe's father always loved him, more than Clyde actually. He was easier on Clyde because that wasn't his son. Parents are harder on their own kids because they expect more from them. It's okay if someone else's kid acts up, but they your own kid that you raised shouldn't be acting like that. He was harsh on Roscoe because he wanted him to grow up as the responsible young man he expected him to be.

I don't blame him for not coming back also. I have family that will not see me till I'm dead they treated me so bac.

reply

Wrong, you see. They Did not Respect him. Never did, not as a child neither as an Adult. Thats not Healthy love, they are just petty jealous scumbags. They Hate him even more that hes Success
A Normal Healthy parent wants to see his child growing, evolving and Autonomous.
They never even played the Tv gift
Disgusting ppl.
Roscoe is far better without them, and Way Higher than them

reply

The father was a prick putting this mildly. My dad didn't care what I did as long as I didnt bother him. Which is worse?
