Cancelled?

Knights Of Prosperity Pretty Much Canceled
By Kristin Veitch Today at 2:16 am

Poor Donal Logue. Oh, how I dig him, but he just can't seem to catch a break when it comes to TV projects lately, and his latest ABC project, Knights of Prosperity--about a gang trying to rob Mick Jagger--is apparently no exception.

Sources tell me that ABC told Knights' writing staff today that the comedy would not be picked up for the "back nine" episodes, which basically means they're planning to shut it down after the current 13-episode commitment.

ABC is not officially uttering a peep about the c-word (that's "cancellation," you dirty birdies!), and simply announcing a time-slot swap with According to Jim. But the writing has been on the wall the past two weeks, as American Idol sucked up viewership from everywhere in the universe, and slashed Knights' audience in half (down to about 3 million viewers).

It's not cancelled. The remaining" episodes are going to air, and just because they don't pick up the "back 9", does not mean it will be cancelled.

It's certainly not a good sign, but remember ABC has 4 other shows they have yet to premiere, so they probably just don't need those episodes. The president of the network, Steve McPherson, loves the show, and the critics love it as well. Kristin is just trying to get a rise out of people.

I don't want to give you false hope, though. The chances that it gets a season 2 are falling each week. Next week will be crucial. If it does better for the rest of the season in the new slot, it will probably be renewed. But if not, it's done for.

I really really really hope not this is one of the few new shows i like .. i really enjoy it .. it gets funnier and funnier , its just on the same time as American Idol so its gets screwed over

What did ABC expect when they initially put it up in an American Idol timeslot? I don't think even TV execs would be dumb enough to be shaking their heads at Knight's low numbers in that situation. That's like putting in a rookie pitcher in his first appearance up against the Yankees and wondering why he wasn't able to strike out the first three hitters.

Besides, if ABC was already intent on just cancelling the show, I don't think they'd even bother trying to move it half an hour earlier. They'd just let it die a quiet death at 9 pm.

But when the Back Nine are not picked up, won't the production offices disband and everybody will go and find other projects?

For a scripted, live action, broadcast network show that premiered in the fall, yes. KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY didn't, and so the circumstances are usually different, with the execs not needing to make a decision concerning additional episodes until May and cast members usually under contract until June or thereabout. (KNIGHTS could have been a special case, since it was originally scheduled to debut in the fall and got bumped to midseason. I don't know, and I'm not familiar with how the contracts work in such a scenario, as I've never been involved in one.)

A couple years ago, the critically-hailed YES, DEAR was only picked up for 13 for midseason - with no talk whatsoever of a back nine. The show did decently that year, CBS was impressed, and it went on to be renewed for a full 22-episode season the next. (Of course, CBS cut the order to 13 and then canceled the show, but all the same.) CROSSING JORDAN only did 13 one year because of Jill Hennessy's pregnancy. It also did well that season, but they couldn't do more than 13 due to her maternity leave. DAY BREAK'S first season was only going to be 13 episodes no matter how well it did. Ditto, I believe, ABC's other "day" show - BIG DAY.

Man I dig this show, I hope it keeps going.

reply

Someone should start a petition to keep it going.

I tell all my friends about it.

Bender: "I was god once."
God: "Yes, I saw, you were doing good till everyone died."

reply

Good show, but it pretty much looks like it's cancelled. Well atleast until the end of this season. Too bad, I really started to enjoy the show.

reply

The show isn't dead yet. Considering how bad ABC's other comedies are doing, it has a much better chance of getting renewed. And like I've said before, it has the critics on its side. That's what saved shows like "Arrested Development" and "The Office".

The most we can do is continue to spread the word and hope the ratings grow in the earlier timeslot

reply

Yeah, I'm really hopin' it does better. It's one of the few new shows I dig. Rockerfeller Butts is the man.

Maybe we should start a petition to cancel American Idol....

Who would of thought that would even be a threat to LOST. If LOST has a huge audience what makes us think KOP would of survived at that time slot. Hopefully the new time will be much better ^_^

Interesting they decided to re-air an episode tonight (Tuesday night, 8:30pm). I LOVE this show, and although my wife and I watch American Idol live, we make sure to tape this show and In Case of Emergency. I would be sorely dissapointed if this show gets cancelled, because it's one of the few comedies on that I actually think is really funny.

Plus, anything that deals with large-scale, Ocean's Eleven-type robberies kicks butt in my book.

Hmmm...my tv guide listed it as Wed @ 9 pm, and after I watched Bones on Fox I switched to ABC to be greeted with According to Jim. Not listed in my area in the weekly guide as being on at all on Tues, so I didn't flip around.

It's bad enough we're inundated with repeats from mid-November to Feb, but they can't even stick to the printed schedules (I know, 'subject to change').

I, too, like this show. I diverge with you, KJF, on AI. In my opinion, a total waste of air.

I'm sorry you had to be greeted by "According to Jim". Hopefully you won't be scarred for too long.

It's on at 8:30 now, after "George Lopez".

I think CBS is really the cancel-happy network. It has so many strong shows that if one show fails, it doesn't matter much. Most CBS cancelled shows don't live for a full month.

Personally, I've never understood why people enjoy watching American Idol.

reply

I doubt that they were ever planning on ordering 22 episodes

That doesn't happen with mid season shows

Yeah and the original show POP IDOL in UK, its a travesty, a total travesty.
Still, according to the execbots: "MORE TV REALITY SHOWS"

reply

Highly doubt its a publicity stunt. Hopefully things will pick up I just hate that they can't see its not doing well because of american idol and not because people don't like it. Well I guess we'll see what happens.

reply

My only prob wit the show is that it's 30min and not an hour! I usually only watch Cable tv channels but between this and Tyra it's the only "OTA" shows that I watch.

reply

I LOVE this show! I would hate it if they cancel it! Rockefeller cracks me up every show! "I thought it was Halloweem, with an m. True story" "Because I am a 300 pound black man." "Batman?" After each one of those lines I had to pause my TiVo and laugh for about 5 minutes. After the Batman one, I seriously almost cried I was laughing so hard!

He is in my top 6 favorite male television show characters along with Vorenous from Rome, Tony Soprano form Sopranos, Ari Gold from Entourage, Peter Griffin from Family Guy, and Cartman from South Park! He even beat out Doug Hefernen from King of Queens, which is tough because Kevin James is hilarious!

Please don't cancel this show, it is too funny!

What the TV exec's don't get is there is a lot of us that can't stand American Idol.I've never watched "reality" shows. This show is great.Maybe some other network will pick it up Like what happened with "Grounded For Life".I thought maybe they were wrapping things up with Mick Jagger last night for sure and thought that maybe they would move on to other stars. There's not much for sit-coms out there nowadays this was a great ORIGINAL idea.Ah-well "what the *beep* ya gonna do?"

I really think this show could be like NBC's The Office...it was slow to pick up viewers in the begining but NBC stuck with it and look how well its doing now...I hope ABC sticks to the show.

reply

"Yes, Dear" was critically hailed? LOL

reply

I agree. But it seems like, unlike NBC, ABC is very quick to cancel shows before word of mouth can spread and viewers start tuning in. Daybreak is another example of an outstanding show that ABC canned after a few episodes. I wish ABC execs would look back at Sienfeld and realize that sometimes good formulas need time for people to recognize them. I can see Knights lasting quite some time and becoming very successful if given a chance. Unfortunately what will most likely happen is that some lame halfbaked gameshow based on something originating overseas be pushed on the air until the only remaing scripted tv are partially finished storylines of cancelled shows that had real potential. Honestly, how can this show not be picked up?

reply

"until the only remaing scripted tv are partially finished storylines of cancelled shows that had real potential."

And don't forget, professional wrestling!

TV executives are really dumb, they don't make allowances for superhits like american idol, sucking up viewership. I mean its the biggest duh in the world. People who don't watch idol, may watch knights...am I right?

reply

Please tell me this show isn't cancelled. This is one of the funniest new shows of the season along with I.C.E

One is too many, and a thousands never enough. If you were any smarter, you'd be a complete moron

reply

Maybe another channel will pick it up...like TBS or something. ABC already paid to start the show and put a lot of advertising into it. I got my fingers crossed. You can watch all the complete episodes on ABC.com, so maybe if enough people watch them then ABC might reconsider what they're doing. They might get renewed...Seinfeld came within an inch of getting canceled and that turned into my personal favorite sitcom of all time.

Oh, Yes, Dear is the worst piece of garbage ever aired...aside from King of Queens that is.

I don't know how shows like 'Men and Trees' and 'Brothers and Sisters' somehow get put on in the first place, then ABC decides to cancel the only thing worth watching on their channel.
