I have a couple of questions...

Obviously, this thread can be a spoiler to some.
You've been warned.

Did Irena really give birth to 9 babies?
Earlier in the film Irena stated that she's had an abortion after each pregnancy.
Later in the film, however, she says she gave birth after all of her pregnancies.
Or is she a bit more mental than I was willing to give credit?

Second question is, Tea really isn't Irena's daughter, correct?
It seems that Tea's father told a bit of truth about Irena, as evidenced by the mute exchange between the father and Irena as she was being taken into custody toward the end of the film, and Tea coming to see Irena on the day of her release from prison. Was the father simply being sympathetic? Or is there something more intricate?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, a$$hole.

I think she did give birth and the babies were sold.
Towards the end of the film someone asked her if she ever thought of trying to find the other babies.

Tea was not her daughter. The only reason Irena ended up at the house of Tea was because Muffa had given the last name that was on his gold necklace when he was trying to think of a name to give to the midwife.
It said in the film that Tea had been legally adopted.

At least this is what I understood.

That's what I figured, too. But there weren't anything definite to substantiate one side or the other with 100% solidity.

Not so much for the maternity part; I was pretty sure about that.
But she does contradict her words on 9 pregnancies(babies).

Thanks for your view.

At some point her attorney mentions that the DNA of Tea and Irena do not match, that seems rather definite to me. The question is whether or not this is important, since they've established a very deep bond that exceeds the mother-daughter bond.

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

The woman being told by as gynaecologist she is infertile, probably isn't Irina, but Valeria Adacher. This would be a subtle play with our expectations about those flashbacks. One does not actually see Irina, one sees a blond woman, but we infer it should be Irina, because all flashbacks were about her. There's more of that play going on in the movie: in the beginning there's the suggestion that Donato Adacher might well be her torturer, about whom we know very little at that point. And there's even a chance, surreptitiously played out by juxtaposing scenes, Adacher might be her one and only true love. It's all part of the hitchcockian make up of this movie. So, in the end the shift in focus within the flashbacks is perfectly in style with the entire movie.

The flashback with the gynecologist could also have taken place after she has escaped and after her ninth birth, which could have damaged her womb. She looked excessively bloody in the birth flashback scene.

The woman being told by a gynaecologist she is infertile, is in fact Irina. This is why Muffa wanted to end her life the night she tried to kill him with the scissors. That was quite obvious and well explained in the movie I am surprised how many people missed that point!

I Imagine when you go and see the docter telling him you had 9 kids and sold them is not a good idea and telling him she had abortion might have made it easier for him.

The fact that she couldn't get pregnant anymore is in my reasoning, the reason why she fears for her life. A babymaking machine then can not have babies is not good for business.

Same old *beep* different day
