Question (spoiler warning)

First of all, what a great movie! Second, I have a question. For what crime did Irena go to jail? For killing Muffa, killing misses Adacher or for pushing the lady from the stairs? I didn't really get that part, and the fact that the has been in jail for quite a long time (at least 8 years) doesn't make it any easier.

reply

yeah
i came here to ask that myself.
probably manslaughter of the bold guy.
but too long for that thou, older Tea looked like late teen.

reply

I think for pushing the old lady down the stairs. The bold guy fell on the rocks, so that could have been self-defense. And she didn't kill Valeria, the bold guy did.

reply

Maybe... probably a mix of more than one crimes.

Even if she was guilty of the guy's death she would have got six months to 5 years here in Italy (it was not intentional)

death to videodrome!
long live the new flesh!

reply

But why did she try to kill that woman at the stairs?

reply

She wanted her job as the nanny/housekeeper.

reply

It seemed that la polizia questioned Irena as a suspect in the death of Mrs. Adacher (set up by her pimp). To disprove her involvement, she in turn implicated herself in a manslaughter/self defence case whilst cooperating with authorities to expose Muffa's prostitution and blackmail operations.
What I couldn't figure out is why did Irena force Gina to sign cheques (Irena had money stashed away and in the bank - was it under the Gina's name?), and what was the significance of Gina revealing she was semi-cognizant (as opposed to vegetative) at the end?
Also, the significance of the potted plants: I take them to symbolise Irena - transplanted into an hostile environment and weathered/lifeless after being exposed to the harsh reality of the streets. Reading too much into this?
Has anyone listened to Tornatore's commentary on the DVD?

reply

She let's Gina sign cause it is her account. You remember Gina telling that she put up a little trust for the young Thea. Irina is using that account to give the girl money.

And I think the coherent think is to show Irina's world collapsing cause she told Gina everything thinking she was safe.

Same old *beep* different day

reply

I took the potted plants to be nothing more than where she'd hidden the money. When her apartment is first burgled, the first thing she does is check on the plants; when she moves out, we see the empty pot on the floor. I assumed it's because she'd buried the money in them.

reply

Take you pick! The Cops and the Lawyers knew her whole story, there was conspiracy, attempted bodily harm, murder, theft, forgery, breaking and entering... and I could go on.

reply

First of all I totally agree in the theory, that the plants were her hiding place for the rest of the money.

My guess of her time in jail is 10-12 years for the manslaughter on the the former housekeeper. Normally she would have been set free on probation for the rest, because of her cooperation and her past(abuse, stolen youth and children). She would for sure also have been forced to take psychological treatment. If she hadn´t told Gina so much, I think she had gotten a lot better off???

No matter what, Tornatore just convinced me so much once again with this comeback. He took his time between the films before, but when he´s ready, he´s ready!!! Second best from him after "Nuovo cinema Paradiso".

reply

Irina committed one crime after another. Forget the killing of Muffa. How about the burglaries and thefts, working under false ID, some degree of kidnapping Tea, attempted murder of the Gina...goes on and on.

My favorite opera is Die Valkure. I've always loved horses.
