Brendan Frasier is so flat

Every time I watch a movie with him, I just can't help thinking that the movie would be better with someone else in his place. No character, no charisma, nothing.

Just some "pretty boy" looks, kinda like a guy your parents liked who pretended to be nice, only to turn up to be a total douchebag and a lamer.

Towards the end of the movie where there is a lot of action without him, it actually gets interesting, then when he takes over again, it turns to crap.

Yawn.

reply

Yeah he is a terrible actor. Made even worse by his inabilty to do a british accent. A bad american actor in this film is totally distracting.

reply

Yea well I guess the author of Inkheart does not agree with you. According to Ms. Funke, Mo's character in the book was inspired by Mr. Fraser's work and voice (In fact the second book Inkspell is also dedicated to him). She based Mo on Brendan Fraser - that is the reason why he was cast in this movie as Mo and I thing he did a wonderful job.
As far as his acting is concerned, unless you have seen Gods and Monsters, Crash (Oscar winner as best picture), the Quiet American or School Ties, you don't know anything about his acting. If you guys have seen these movies and still don't like him, that's fine - you're entitle to your opinion.

reply

Yeah, I read that about Funke wanting him for the role in the review section and couldnt believe it, its not how I imagined Mo and I really liked the character (Only tall and strong part matches).

Fraser is flat and Ive come to dislike him completely over time, he is a second rate actor and I really dont care if Ms. Funke likes his weak acting or his weird figure.

I will however check the movies you suggested.

Awesome post, dj mrt 2000! LOL!!!

I guess the author at least knows a good actor when she sees one! There are people who like Brenden and those who do not, just like Tom Hanks. Both are terrific actors and good at what they do - they are in high demand. This means that most people find them good and Hollywood finds them marketable. So if you don't like them for some silly personal reason that's fine, but to make erroneous comments like "he can't act," you are plain wrong. He's a good comedic actor and dramatic actor as well, and brings emotional weight to his roles. Also, he seems like a good guy. I agree that Gods and Monsters was an amazing film and Brenden was tops in it.

reply

This movie lacked more than just Brendan's inability to act in this part....it wasn't a very good interpretation of the book nor visually dynamic....the best part of this whole film was watching paul bettany do his thing and look so amazingly hot doing it! God! That body! He buffed up for it completely....but the movie just wasn't good reguardless of frasier being in it, although he wouldn't have been my choice to play MO...

So in your opinion, anyone remotely popular is definitely a good actor? What about Orlando Bloom, Jessica Alba, Halle Berry, Steven Seagal etc etc?

Brendan Frasier is definitely far from being remarkable and that has nothing to do with me liking him or disliking him (I personally don't like Clint Eastwood or Denzel Washington, but I would definitely not call either of them a bad actor). Comparing him with Tom Hanks is quite out of place, as Hanks has proven himself mutliple times (e.g. Green Mile).

Frasier's quite superficial; he fails to bring any depth. You are free to like him (and many people do), but that doesn't make him a better actor.

reply

He wasn't even trying to have a British accent.

Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly

reply

Exactly, because nowhere in the movie does it tell you he is suppose to be British. You are just assuming he was British and should have spoken with British accent. If the role required him to speak with British accent, he would have. He is a classically trained actor - graduate of Seattle's Cornish Institute - one of the most prestigious art schools in the world. I am sure he would not have any problems doing a British accent.

reply

I think Brendan Fraser has a lot of charisma. He, to me, gives off kind of the same vibe Will Smith does, that just makes you like him. At least in The Mummy series. Crash was terrible though, I cannot believe you cited that as one of his best works. There are few movies that are worse than the over-the-top, terribly written Crash. I haven't seen Inkheart yet, but I will soon because he's in it.

reply

Obviously becoz he was the actor who inspired Mrs Funke to write the character, besides that, I love Brendan, he is very warm in this movie, he and Maggie do a great couple of father and daughter

How the herk cares about stupid accents, and who the herk says they are damrn british anyways.
What the herk accents so.

More stupidity around ridiculous accents.

Do you recognize my voice...?

reply

Well, if you really want to hear Brendan Fraser do accents, listen to him in Inkspell which is the second book in this series. He narrated the audio book which was amazing. He had a different persona and accent for each character in the book and I think he does five different accents, British, German, Russian, French and Southern in the book.

reply

Crash is not one of my favorite movies either but it is an Academy Award winner as the best picture and Brendan's portrayal of district attorney was good. My favorite dramatic Brendan role, however, is the one in Quiet American. The Mummy series are good but they are action flicks with not much of an acting. I would not measure his acting skills from the Mummy movies which most people try to do. If you want to see how good an actor he is, you have to see Gods and Monsters and the Quiet American. (He was really good in School Ties too).

reply

I agree.. so many people came to this board (that obviously hate the guy) just to bash every role he got on all his movies without any particular reason.
I liked him in The Air I Breathe and Still Breathing.

reply

Jason...is that you?!!

reply

I agree.

reply

Mo isn't SUPPOSED to have a British accent. if you want to get nit-picky about it, complain about Meggie. she was the one with the accent. maybe they should've cast a girl that didn't have one if people are going to complain about Brendan's lack of one.

i for one find him to be a great actor, and very talented. he is one of my favorites, and i always enjoying watching his films. Ms. Funke obviously felt the same way. she's the author; i think she'd know how her characters are supposed to look, act, and sound.

"Brendan Frasier is so flat." Yeah, I totally agree.

He's not a terrible actor, such as Keanu Reeves. Frasier's more akin to Sam Neill. He has all the looks of a leading man, but he's only capable of a very limited range of expressions that are leading man-ish.

The super-double talented Paul Bettany's presence makes Frasier's shortcomings all the more glaring in "Inkheart." Frasier's limitations don't become distracting in stuff like "The Mummy" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth" because the other performances in those films are equally one-note. But throw in someone like Bettany and Frasier becomes an eyesore.

reply

Well everyone is entitled to her/his opinions. Frankly, I would never pay any money to watch Paul Bettany in any movie. There is nothing special about him.

Brendan as an actor held his own against the likes of Ian Mckellen (Gods and Monsters) and Michael Cain (Quiet American). I think he can hold his own against Paul Bettany. Duh!

Thank you ! So there !

reply

For me he is a lot like Tom Cruise or Kevin Costner. It's hit or miss and unfortunately you never know what will be good or bad. I haven't really seen a lot of good in Brendan Fraser.

reply

I respect everyone's opinion. I tend to view his acting based on genre he is doing. He is almost always good in drama movies (unfortunately few people have seen them even though he has many). His comedies are hit or miss. I loved him in Bedazzled and Blast from the Past but can live without Airheads or Encino man. He was also excellent in those Scrubs episodes. Action movies don't have much of an acting, you just have to have the action hero look which he has. I loved him in Mummy I and II but Mummy III sucked (I don't think he had any lines in Mummy 3). Again, while he may not be always good, he is very versatile. I don't know that many actors who can do slap stick comedy like George of the Jungle and still pull the acting he did in Quiet American.

reply

My fiancee and i are in debate over this whole thing! i love frasier and Do find him charming and find he has good comedic timing. and yes, he is eye candy.

My fiancee on the other had refers to him as "beady eyes", and thinks a lack of him in cinema would do movies good.

LoL this board seemed to please him

reply

First of all to some of you here: It's Fraser, not Frasier =.=

2nd: His best performance for me was his appearance in Scrubs (3 episode). He was funny and damn sure had charisma and put a very nice touch to those 3 episodes.

I happen to love him...and Paul Bettany. But if you want to see a couple of movies that are very "different" that he's in, get "Still Breathing" and "The Passion of Darkly Noon". Two movies that have to kind of grow on you, but once you're into them, they stick in your head.

BIH Michael Jackson. The world is a little safer for kids now.

reply

Oh pls the op must be flat because Brendan was really good in this film.

reply

He isnt even that cute. But do all actors have to cute, or beautiful?

reply

Awww, I read the OP and thought this would be a discussion about how flat this movie was, not some rant just about Brendan Frasier.

Well, my two cents anyway.

Brendan Frasier and a lot of the actors in this film are brilliant actors yet they seem so flat in it. Only Dame Helen Mirren and um... his name escapes me but the main villain... are worth watching. Though Jim Broadbent is amusing in a funny kind of way and ... Dustfinger... is good too. Can you tell I've just watched the movie? It was mind NUMBING!

I think part of the problem was the script which unbelievably predictable and ordinary. I blame editing or direction or both too because somehow this film failed to get the viewer caught up in the magic of possibility- I wished more to be a Silvertongue after the promos than after the final film.

I've never read the books, let's make that clear up front. But I expected this story to do three things. 1) Get me caught up in the world of Inkheart for 100 minutes- the adventure, the joys and the thrills, the horrors and fears; 2) Make me wish I was a Silvertongue after the film and 3) leave me wanting more. It failed in 1 & 3 completely and was only marginally successful in 2.

So many questions but not the thrilling 'I-need-to-see-the-movie-again' kind. What good did it serve by having the crazy aunt return? She didn't really change stuff much did she; it was more the return of the Shadow that caused the distraction that allowed Toto to take the page to Meg. Why did she rush through Inkheart and calling the shadow but stop every other sentence while reading the revision? Why did they allow whoever did this to a potentially brilliant movie to ruin a decent franchise???

I missed the film when it actually came out because in spite of all the promos, it didn't make a blip on the news when it finally went into the cinemas and since RL was hectic for me at the time, I forgot about it until recently.

And I must say it was horribly disappointing. Such an amazing premise and brilliant cast- how did this disaster happen?
