One thing I never got

So like, the Halo rings wipe out all life in order to starve the Flood right?
Well, wouldn't that kill the Flood?
I mean, they are alive, and it would be much faster than starving them all. Hell, if the forerunners could make a death beam that kills everything with the exception of the Flood, couldn't they reverse it so that it ONLY kills the Flood? There has to be some sort of different protein or some *beep* that's only in the Flood that can be destroyed via a inter-galactical array system like the Halos, thus killing them all while sparing other life forms. Is this explained in the books? I played 1-4, ODST, and Reach, so if it was explained I must have missed it, unless it was in Halo Wars or something.

The Halo array is designed to take out any life-form with a nervous system, The Flood however lacks one as the actual infection is a super cell, the pulse is strong enough to destroy any biomass hit with it though, so any Flood form hit would be destroyed. The Forerunners however knew that the Flood may come back so they kept some samples on the rings to study them and try to find a cure... it didn't work. I recommend reading the Forerunner trilogy by Gregg Bear, it delves into Forerunners, the Flood, ancient humans and the likes.
