I couldn't help but notice

When Karen is for the first time in the subway waiting for the train where she meets Mike, he's reading a copy of The Demon Haunted World - Science as a Candle in the Dark by Carl Sagan... one of the most influential books I've ever read.

I wonder if it was just thrust in there because "Mike was supposed to be reading something" or if there's something more profound there.
