Did anybody else find this strangely depressing?

Don't get me wrong, it was very funny, especially the first 1/3 or so, and I was laughing at just how incredibly dysfunctional and, for want of a better word, "uncool" the characters were (although I felt very sorry for poor Lily). But after a bit the film became quite real and Jarrod's failings didn't seem so funny anymore because he was bullied and his brother committed suicide and his father thought he was pathetic and he was always trying to earn his respect and failing. That I found very sad. Also the way the father had given up on life so much he sat in a wheelchair so he could be moved around even though he could walk. And the end was all wrong; I thought Jarrod would prove himself to everybody by accepting the apology of Eric, and the father would appreciate his maturity. But instead he attacked him so it wasn't really resolved at all :(

Well I have to sort of agree. Half way through I was thinking I am not interested in this, these people are just so sad and pathetic. But I kept up with it and it was still depressing but not so much I didn't finish watching it.

I would call it depressingly pathetic - but agree with the OP. Fine little indie film with some major quirks and minor triumphs (and you couldn't help but root for Lily! and Jarrod's daughter) and moderate laughs. But, in general, too pathetic for me. For better writing & laughs, there are films like Juno. For quirky, I prefer Moonrise Kingdom.

Totally, I found myself okay with the end only because all I wanted was for lily to be happy. Even if that meant being with that asshat jerrod.

Thanks for the spoilers.

I found these characters to be depressing and it was hard at times to watch them struggle with their personal issues.

But, I did find the end of the film to tie everything together in an uplifting way that made me believe positive relationships are possible, despite all the problems people may have. And in a way, it's reassuring seeing these characters who are so awkward and disconnected from a lot of things.
