So her sister and her aunt are both named Beatrice???

That's a little strange to name your daughter after your sister.

I don't think it's strange at all. It's common to name children after loved ones.

Roberta is also named after her father, Bob. I get the impression that the Quimbys wanted a boy to name after Bob but once Roberta was born they realized that, although the baby was a girl, it would be the last chance to name a child after her father so they gave her the feminine version.

No, it isn't strange. My grandfather's sister named her son after my grandfather. Lucille Ball named both of her children after her husband, Desi, and herself. Hence, you have little Lucy and Desi Jr.

That's not a strange thing at all. I know quite a few family members (sisters included) who are named after them. It is a way to honor someone you love and to continue a family name....

It might be less popular now, but at the time the books were written, it was fairly common for children to be named after loved ones. But, I think it's more common for males to be named after family members than females.

It is a VERY common practice to name neices and nephews after aunts and uncles.

My mom and her sisters all named their daughters after each other... and I'm my mom's only daughter. Her oldest sister has one daughter, and the 2nd oldest has two; my mom only has two sisters so everyone has a niece named after them.
I'm glad someone sees how odd it is.

"This is good... Isn't it?"

I know that Ramona called her sister Beatrice Beezus as a baby since she couldn't pronounce it as a child. I guess it can happen that 2 family members have the same name.

I do not find it all that strange, but then my mom's younger sister was named "Amy" after their mother as suggested by the two (oldest) brothers who were both in the Navy when the younger "Amy" arrived. Years later one of those brothers named his daughter "Amy" also in honor of his mother. So, "Amy 1" had a daughter "Amy 2" and also a granddaughter "Amy 3"

as a side note, I believe that my mom and her sister "Amy 2" also have a cousin "Amy" who was also named for my Grandmother.

Now where it gets odd, is that "Amy 3" has both a niece and a grand-daughter named "Lydia" ;)

While for the most part, my extended family has lots of names that are not duplicated... the oldest of those above mentioned brothers (whose daughter is not amy) has both a son and grandson named after him... Dennis S., father of Dennis A., father of Dennis J.

We have 3 Timothy'. Uncle and 2 nephews AND a Timi..a daughter. also at least 3 Franks, 4 Josephs and 3 Suzannes, a Patrick and a Patricia, both called Pat, 3 variations on James, Jacob great, great, great grandfather born in 1858 and a Jacob born in 2005, my mother was named after her mother, and a surname used as a first name and a middle name.

Naming someone after a family member is very common.

reply

Not really. My cousin shares his name with his dad, my uncle. Actually, having recently gone to a family reunion, I've realised that a lot of my family members have the same name. It's not weird at all.
