Manny is a schmuck!

I think you're meant to feel some sympathy for Manny and his problems. Didn't work for me - I just felt the silly twat deserved everything he got, and in real life he would never have changed like he did at the end.

Just my four pennorth.

No, he wasn't going to change (the narration doesn't even imply that he would, just that for that day he was alright) but that doesn't make him a silly twat. He obviously suffered from Obsessive Compulsions and probably wouldn't get any kind of support in those days. That's hardly his fault. You are supposed to feel sympathy for him and the people his condition affected.

it wasnt OCd that made him cheat the taxman, and THAT was what caused all the problems...if he hadnt been a cheat then he'd have been able to give the supermarket his accounts books, and then sold them his business and then been able to give his son the bar mitzvah he deserved. If he also hadn't been cheating any savings would have been able to go in the bank and wouldn't have been destroyed in the fire.

Cheats never prosper...good moral.

OCD also never made him the crap father he was to his son.

Manny came over as a real person - flawed, obsessive but trying really hard. It's easy to say that he got what he deserved, but a little understanding is what is required, not a blatant disregard of another's feelings.
