Why Is Steven being Dubbed?!

WTF is steven being dubbed???
Does anyone know why?!

He used to speak for himself in his earlier movies...

reply

I was horrified too. My friends and I love watching his movies, but this one is just sad. We all wondered what was with the dubbed voice too. My friend seaerched the internet and this was one site's explaination on the subject. It might not be correct, but after watching the movie, I wouldn't be surprised. I needed closure on what the hell I justed watched. Check it out if you wish.

In the begining it sounds a bit of a southern drawl and then he returns to normal and then southern again. And he is also 100 pounds overweight.

reply

Yes, yes, yes we know he's a little heavier than usual, we can see that. So what? It's been done to death, this mentioning his weight. Boring, boring, boring. What the hell difference does it make what weight he is? you'd think you could find something better to do with your time than coming on here repeating the same old tripe we've all heard a hundred times before. Just give it a rest, will you!!! Enough already.

reply

Listin lola-hamilton, I agree that they keep talking about it and drives me insane but I would like him to at least lose enough weight to do his own fighting again. I mean, he uses stunt men to do his own fighting and that is stupid. If Steven just lose some weight to do his own 1990's style fighting then I happy okay.

Any way with this voice dubbed thing, first off, would somebody give me a reason why Seagal is allowing this, just because he is making DTV films don't mean that his voice should get automacially dubbed. So, would any of you give a very good reason that is voice gets dubbed please?

reply

The word on the street is that Segal is a little less than forthcoming during the post-production process.

reply

he's done this before in another movie, I can't remember which, but its sure annoying

reply

Steven sounded like Martin Sheen half of the time >_<

he has asthma which pervents him from running long distances and some speaking
Wow! You suck!

reply

The real reason is the following: Often Dialogue is being changed after principal shooting has ended. Seagal, having to do a lot of movies now to get some money, is often not available to do the real ADR.
But in my opinion they could have at least tried to find someone with a voice that sounds at least somewhat like his. I must be possible to find someone who doesn't sound that different.
BTW: I am just watching the movie for 30 minutes now. I just checked imdb.com because of the dubbing problem. But Seagal must have been happy with the outcome of this movie, because his next one is directed by the same guy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh and another thing: First: He isn't always available. Second: They pay him so little nowadays that he isn't that happy to do more work for jumpchange..

Try not - do or do not, there is no try!

reply

I was a Seagal "die-hard-fan"... but, sincerelly... it is almost untolerable.. to watch his lattest movies.

My God, what happened ???

What about those excellent movies from the 90's ? Under siege, Above the Law, out for justice - to name a few...

Mr. Seagal, please, do not become a "prostitute" with your career, and with your fans !!!

Try to find a better production team, better contracts...

These dubbed movies... they are the worst kind of movie's I've ever saw!!!

It is unnaceptable.

reply

I might accept that as an explanation if it wasn't for the fact that he is the producer of these movies, too.

reply

:) real reason

reply

The reason is none of the above in the case of this film. The real reason that the producers dubbed in almost all of Seagal's dialog in this case was that they changed the story completely AFTER filming was completed and Seagal was off the project! For some f-up reason they decided to change it from a story about vampires from outer space to some crap about a super drug. They couldn't afford to bring Seagal back in to do the overdubbs and I don't think he wanted to do it for any price any way. He liked the film's original story and did not want it changed. But, he had no control over what the studio and distributors did with the film after he'd fulfilled his contract.

reply

No, the REAL reason in this case is that the film's producers took a finished film about an alien-vampire invasion and changed it to one about people turned into killers by a super-drug. And they did this after the fact by re-dubbing the dialog and doing reshoots with the least expensive actors. Seagal was already long gone from the project--which he had considered finished--when the producers decided to change the entire film.

The Seagal dialog that's redubbed is that in which Seagal refers to Aliens. They just redubbed with another actor spouting the "CTX" dialog.

I know it sounds stupid--cos why would they think that sci-fi vampires would sell better than drugs? But I know they did this for a fact. All you have to do is Google the original film's original title, "Harvester," and "Seagal" you'll get all kinds of articles from 2006 that will describe the then-upcoming film as an "alien invasion" sci-fi pic. Also read the Attack Force chapter in Vern's book "Seagalogy: The Ass Kicking Films of Steven Seagal" in which the screenwriter of the film confirms this fact.

reply

Thanks for the info. Its so sad that Seagal is making so many B-movies now. An actor's only as good as the script and the director. This director obviously has no clue how action scenes are done. They have ZERO tension and the characters are all 1 dimensional.

reply

Now that you say it.. you are totally right. I knew that he sounded like someone I knew. Yeah, he totally sounded like M. Sheen.

reply

Glad I am not the only one to hear Martin Sheen...But that was just pathetic...The only reason to watch him now is his bad acting.....and I couldn't even enjoy that.

reply

Sojiroseta52 , that's exactly who I thought he sounded like too!!

reply

He was too lazy to do the re-dub, just like the acting in this movie is lazy. He's not even trying anymore.

reply

The scenes where he just changes voice are hilarious. Notably when he was interrogating the black girl, it started with the dub, then Seagal for a sentence then back to the dub! Hilarious movie!

Ok Mr. wise guy hasbeenninja, so you think, no, you know, that the reason for dubbing Steven's voice is "EATING", do me a favour will you, first explain in a way that an intelligent person will understand what the hell that means!!. I know it will be difficult for you, but give it a try, ok. Then tell everyone how you got to be such a first-class village idiot. Did you take lessons or is it hereditary? The reason for the dubbing has been explained over and over by people who did know what they were talking about, ok. The thing I find so pathetic about folks like you is, you try so hard to be funny, and just end up showing everyone what an absolute moron you really are.

reply

Lola, why do you have to be so sarcastic and bitchy every time you post? If you don't have anything nice to say, please shut up!

Anyway, I thought maybe he had a cancer or something that changed his voice. Or drinking sometimes changes it. My kids didn't believe me, but I knew his voice was different! Besides, my son thought his fight scenes were pathetic. They were over before you could blink!

reply

Be aware of the facts before you start getting smart with me, ok. I'm good at putting morons in their place, and I don't give a stuff how I do it. Discussing Steven's eating habits is a no-no in my book. What the hell does anyone know about it? Only a moron would assume that Steven gaining a little weight is down to eating. People gain weight for several reasons. And who the hell are you to say "shut up" to anyone? Oh, what will you do if I don't? You and your damned kids mean bugger all to me, so you shut up and clear off. Mind your damned business in future!!!

reply

You're a moron Lola, now go back to your hole. Now!

reply

If he gained a little wieght, and could still fight, no one would care...But its not a little weight, its a *beep* ton of weight. Sorry to bust your Bubble that his movies are horrid now....Its just a fact, I still watch them though, at least I can get a good laugh.

reply

I am curious, are the stunt doubles in his films still wearing fat suits?

reply

I think they Airbrushed/Photoshopped the DVD cover too!

reply

Lola, I am a huge fan of Segal's previous work, back when it was still good, and it bugs me what some people say about his hair, aging and weight as well. But, I am lost in how anyone could think themselves in some position of authority to put those people in their place. I mean, seriously, you aren't putting anyone in their place. No one walks away from these boards licking their wounds because you attacked them over their lame attempts at being smarmy or witty. They look stupid all by themselves, and you throw yourself right into the stupid arena by lowering yourself to that level. Who gives a tinker's fart what they think. People like that obviously don't care what you think, so why respond? Ignore stupidity and it eventually fades away.

Now, in response to everyone's thoughts on the dubbing. I can see where some of the dialogue may have changed due to the plot shifts, but there are a crap load of scenes where the dub actor says the exact same words that Segal is mouthing. So, that theory doesn't work.

That he was unable to do ADR is possible, but highly unlikely. ADR is always part fo the filming post production schedule, and is always included in the building of the budget. That they couldn't afford him to do ADR is absurd as well, as I said above, and as Segalk himself being an above the line member of the production, that theory is highly improbable.

Fact is, the only logical reason for the weird dubbing is that the changes were ordered by larger share holders in the film, and he knew the changes made the film an abortion and he distanced himself from it in protest, and because of typical legal reasons, kept it to himself.

Either way, this film sucked and I hated seeing him in it.

reply

I'm sad, not only with Steven but with the other 'heroes' that I used to admire when I was a child... my wish, is for them to join forces and start making movies together, with good stories, reasonable effects and good directors, so lets wish, steven, chuck, jean-claude, speakman and others start doing movies together.. Keep on fighting..

reply

I'm funding his next big movie.

Our budget will be $20.

I'll be a rich man.

reply

I love all of Seagal's movies, but the dubbing in this was awful!! I couldnt enjoy this, as much as i wanted to and be able to say, "well i thought it was good."
To me, Seagal's worst films arent him, he's great, it's the crew he works with!!! Whether it be awful acting or awful effects. This is a prime example

reply

He's probably just really lazy... or you can barely hear his mumbling fat man voice.

reply

He had the flu and they had a tight schedule. They decided that ADR, (it's not dubbed because it's still steven talking) is the only way to go with their tights schedule

reply

OK. Here is the real reason: The movie was filmed in Yugoslavia (or one of the other Baltic countries). Not everyone spoke English in the cast. So when it came time to dub their voices into English, it was easier just to dub everyone including SS.

If you thing this is bad, try being a Highlander fan with the garbage they put out that was so bad it premiered on Sci-Fi channel.
