Did i got the ending right ?
The whole story of killing his wife and his sons , agout waitress , his comrade war veteran , and thedeath of his daughter never happened ?? He just imagined all of that ?

reply

That's what I got from it. It turned into the somewhat happy ending. Of course, back in reality he still will have to deal with the angry wife and walking from his job leaving the store wide open to theft.

Thanks for your reply slim-44.Now i see that i saw it clear, and i am hapy for it ,because otherwise it would be just a very brutal film about one tortured and ill soul.Still just hit toughts are brutal and horrorfull enough for us people who didn`t expierenced the war as those soldiers did.

I have been patiently waiting on this movie to come to DVD since I saw it back in late 07. It's definitely haunted me all this time.

I can tell you that the theatrical version did not end happily. The girl was hit by a car and died instantly. I stayed through the credits, hoping for a better ending, but it didn't come. But I was also pretty sick, so I might not have remembered it. The very last scene in the movie was a long shot of Gracie crying

I just watched the film and had the same question, this was all in his mind? Hopefully he can learn from his vividly imaginative dream.

reply

That's what I got out of it too. He thought about shooting his wife but looked out the window at his daughter and changed his mind.

reply

Wow, now I have rewatch the movie. I did not think of that at all, I thought he did kill everyone.

Just watched the movie at the Long Beach Island NJ Film Festival and had the opportunity to talk with actor Joe Morton afterwards and he told me that the ending was exactly as posted above - the whole horrific story of killing his wife, kids, running from the law, befriending and killing his friend, his daughter getting killed - was just a bad dream of what would happen if he killed his wife to start it all after the sweet happy family memories at the end .

SPOILERS: That really ruins the whole movie for me and makes it a cheap trick. I was profoundly moved by the story and it was a powerful story. Now I find out the director was trying to be more clever than good. I wish you could use profanity on this board. Here I was thinking this was one of my favorite movies of all times, now it turns into a B-movie. %$@*

Huh? You guys are joking, right? All a dream? Nooooo Waaayyy!!

I just saw it last night. The little girl is hit by the car and she's dead. He's holding her in his arms, crying her name over and over. Where was there a "dream" thing? I mean, what makes you think it was all his imagination? I didn't get that at all.

I've already returned the movie, or I'd watch the ending again.

in the version i saw on Netflix, his daughter is hit by a car when she is running to her father, and then he runs up and holds her crying. then it cut to the scene of him sitting at the table with his wife on the phone with his boss, and he doesn't shoot her. the movie ended with the camera on Celina with a tear running down her face as she smiled
