I've seen alot of bad movies but this takes the cake...

First and foremost, I am Arab (Lebanese/American), so before you jump the gun and accuse me of being some Velveeta-on-Wonderbread eating redneck, I thought you should know that.

Getting down to business here's why this movie is garbage:

1. Plot is total *beep* The producers said it is "60%-70% containing real historical events" I think he meant 6%-7% but that got lost in translation...
Its the most unrealistic *beep* I've ever watched and I've been to Iraq before...4 times to be exact

2. The equipment and dress of the American Soldiers is ATROCIOUS! I've seen some horrible straight to video films before but this is worse than all of those...not only was plot realism an afterthought, the Soldiers uniforms are hilariously bad!

3. The Billy Zane character.....hmmm where do I begin!? He's probably what an uneducated street crawling Turk would picture in his mind if someone who hated Americans with a passion indoctrined him with silly misguided views of what American Military professionals are like. No one in Iraq EVER has had this kind of autonomy of command and authority of resources as this character has. Its so impossible to believe...ever scene with Zane was a laugher. He must have been hard up for roles to accept this comedically bad character

4. Contractors do not wear wife beaters and gold chains. They do not give orders to American troops. They do not conduct offensive operations. Enough said lol.

5. LASTLY...the tactics...OH MY GOD the tactics of the American Troops! Running around like chickens with their heads cut off from a firefight! NO! This does not happen! There is a reason that Anti-Coalition combatants in Iraq have resorted to Car bombs and explosive penetrators...they can't fight! They don't have the training. They don't have the equipment. They don't have the skill. They don't have the numbers. The facts are, for every American that has been killed in Iraq, there have been 50-75 enemies taken with him. Thats how it goes in Iraq....enemy does not stand and fight Americans....when they have, they have been mowed down.

Overall Synopsis:

A garbage movie trying to give Turks a false sense of superiority. Turkish Special forces causing havioc in Iraq? Please! They wouldn't get past the Peshmerga. They'd stick out like a sore thumb in Kurdistan and they CERTAINLY would not be given quarter. Prolly be shot dead

Please tell me that even rednecks would never resort to eating Velveeta on bread. That made me shudder even more than the acting, stereotyping, and caricature-like acting in this film.

"It's meant to make fun of americans, their piss poor attitude, their arrogance, clothes etc."

So I take it you've never met a down-to-earth, Genuine, polite and respectable American? Newsflash buddy, most Americans aren't the obnoxious, sadistic, gun-toting thugs with ridiculous clothes that the film portrays.

If the film was lampooning historical facts and just trying to make some money via entertainment, then why the hell is it claimed to be based on true events and caused a surge in Turkish nationalism and Anti-American sentiment? While you may think it's just an action film, it's obvious that most of its target audience (Turks), do not.

A think the key to hostility on this board is that Turks have been insulted by the actions of the head-bagging incident and feel they had to make this movie and take on the big guy. Here's a spoiler: THE AVERAGE AMERICAN IS COMPLETELY INDIFFERENT TO TURKEY. Americans don't know or care about Turkey, and we certainly don't hate you guys. It takes some legendary inferiority complex to think the rest of the world cares about you enough to make a film about Turkish soldiers who stick it to evil Americans and on the way, kill some Kurds.

Welcome to the club. Now you know how everyone feels when Americans make such movies about everyone else. No one is supposed to be jingoistic except Americans? Americans are regularly indoctrinated by the ugly nationalism and often racism of Hollywood movies and TV. And don't make me start on the accuracy of the American movies depicting foreign cultures.

I wouldn't exactly say this movie is 'garbage', but I do agree that there are a lot of inaccuracies and blatant misrepresentations of people from all sides in this movie. For many people in Turkey, this was a shocking movie and sadly it came out at a time when Anti-American sentiments were growing - Many Turkish citizens don't think much of America's involvement in Iraq and at times I had friends who would demand that I explain why American forces were even in Iraq.

All that aside, you have to consider the television series that relates to this movie - This movie may have been made out to be a masterpiece by some people, but I believe much of its hype is directly related to the popularity of the television show it is connected to. The movie itself has some points that are worth commenting on or discussing, but in the end it's just another dramatic film. Like the television series, it relies on extremely watered-down representations of politics and current events to draw people in. Please don't assume that the inaccuracies found in the movie are the result of maliciousness on the part of the Turks involved in the production of this movie - Many of the inaccuracies are the result of mediocre film making techniques or writing.

It was far more realistic as all the rambo movies I've ever seen ;)

reply

Yeah, but even the Rambo movies werent that pro-american, if you watch them, John Rambo vowed to not return to America, because of the way the American people treated him after the vietnam was and the American government set him up in Rambo 2, the Rambo plotlines are as anti-american as they are anti-communist. Rambo is an anti-hero, not an all american hero.

But this is just "Good turkish muslims" kill "evil American Chrisitans soldier"

the hood incident was turks operating illegally in Kurdish north Iraq anyway, an illegal action made out they are victims, turks really are hypocrites

and im no fan of Iraq/afghanistan wars meself.

reply

"But this is just "Good turkish muslims" kill "evil American Chrisitans soldier" "

But the opposite is totally ok, by your standards? Because that is how American culture represents Muslims.

It may not be the most realistic film out there, but it's still a h*** of a lot more realistic than all those American films portraying the US as the good guy liberating the rest of the world. Anyone with the ability to look beyond primitive network propaganda should have figured out by now how ridiculous that really is.

Serious? You actually wrote that? The United States sends more aid around the world than most countries combined.

When Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake, United States Armed forces were the first on the scene to provide medical aid and pull people out of the rubble. The U.S. army and navy do more good around the world than any nation on earth.

The fact that you think network propaganda is responsible for the image of American armed forces as liberators is ridiculous. If anything, there's more propaganda out there distorting the image of American military. Example A would be this piece of crap film. There's so many other examples out there, it's no surprise people are completely ignorant when it comes to all the good things done by the American military around the world.

reply

Patently false. The "aid" has single-handedly ruined so many Third World economies and served to subsidize dictators that have been propped up to serve Western interests.

Look at Haiti today. The US have been busy transforming it into a satellite state. Look at what US aid has done in places like Somalia, Yemen and Pakistan where thousands of people have been killed by drone strikes.

reply

Hilarious because what you wrote is patently false. I'm talking monetary aid. The only reason any dictators or militia leaders get a hold of it is because of the corruption within those nations.

Like I said before, the first people to bring aid and military support to Haiti after the earthquake was the United States. They saved more lives and helped rebuild more of the country than any other nation.

Show me one other country that did as much. You can't - there isn't any.
