So by this same whiny logic....

Can we say that they Welsh-washed Batman with Bale? Or 'were there no American actors to play Superman?"

People are people, you idiots. As long as they can play the character, who cares what skin/heritage they are. Bale did a fantastic job as Batman. Michael B Jordan was awesome as Human Torch. Stop whining.

Comparing Historical figures to fictional characters is a no-no when trying to make a point.

Batman isn't a real person. And Bruce Wayne is a white man traditionally and cinematically in every regard. He's always been portrayed as such. The only difference between Bale and Affleck playing Batman is that they were born on different continents and they have different natural accents. Otherwise, they're white just like Batman. And last I checked, the majority of movies and TV shows feature white people predominantly so there's no lack of them on your screens. Hell, the upcoming Iron Fist show just cast a white guy (who's not even a great actor to begin with) to play a traditionally Asian character. I bet you won't take up any kind of advocacy for that one, will you?

Nina is a real woman. A woman whose complexion was dark - so no ifs, ands, or buts about that. Dolling Zoe (a naturally light-skinned black woman, who are oft deemed the only acceptable types of black women in our society) up and plastering darker makeup on her rather than going with someone who resembles Nina more is just silly.

The whole "people are people" and "I'm colorblind" ideas are stupid. People are different and ignoring that fact is why we're at this point in g0dd@mn 2016. You don't want to change to suit others that you're offending, but you expect the actual affected and offended minorities (race, sexuality, etc.) to not speak up or defend themselves when they're hurt or marginalized.

I hate the concept of "let the job go to the right person" because in your eyes, the right person is always white.

reply

No no, the 'right' person is the best actor for the role.

And fictional or not, its the same concept; black actors take on white characters all the time, and people like you complain; white actors take on black characters, and people complain.

Long story short, you people need to get your panties untied. Its 2016.

reply

how about, '"it's 2016 and blackface should stay in 1932"?

reply

And the "only difference" between Zoe and Nina is skin color; accents are pretty unique and special too, but you know what? Who cares, because they're fine actors.

And no, I'm not going to crusade about Iron Fist because.....I don't care about what race plays what character.

So by this logic, should Jared Leto not have played a gay man in Dallas Buyers Club? Were there not enough gay actors better suited?

I win.

"the "only difference" between Zoe and Nina is skin color"
I still find THIS argument retarded as well. A black American woman played by a black American woman with Hispanic heritage. We are still calling Barack Obama our first black President. He's not. He's our first mulatto President. Our first non-all-white President. The whole thing gets me twisted, although I should not let it get to me.
I get what you are saying about people not arguing about Bruce Wayne or Superman, and the people saying its not the same thing because we are talking about a non-fictional character. But people threw a fit about Michael B. Jordan playing in F4. I just think its retarded to throw a fit about casting in any movie, play, or any visual medium---yes, even if it is based on history. Last I checked, movies aren't the curriculum in school, textbooks are--so unless they are trying to rewrite the History BOOKS (which is arguable lol) then you are wasting up all your energy that you reserve for getting offended. You have a right to be offended, or whatever, you have a right to not go see it, but then you have the right to shut the f@ck up and get over it just like every other thing that offends you. The sensitivity level in this country (and yes it seems to be limited to this country) needs to be turned many, many notches down.

*beep* off, you goddamn *beep* *beep*

No, you do NOT 'win'. First of all, It wasn't a gay man. It was a transgender woman. Jared Leto SHOULDN'T have been casted as a transgender woman, because there's plenty of transgender actresses struggling to break through when all of this cisgender men are putting on makeup and feminine clothing, further enforcing the misnomer that being transgender is simply wearing different clothes and putting on an act. All of us transgender people were outraged and STILL outraged because this continues.
I really don't think you're living life to the fullest when you think you're being a well functioning and right minded adult when you feel the need to go "I win!" when trying to argue with someone over the Internet.
You don't win.
Nobody wins.
Everything is hell.

Did you feel this way when Amandla Stenberg who is part white and part black was cast as Rue in the Hunger Games while white people flipped out because they stated a black girl should have never been cast. I mean come on....she's part white also. When are whites going to realize biracials are just as much apart of your community as ours???

I didn't have a problem at all with Zoe being cast as Nina Simone and that's coming from someone who isn't some huge fan of Zoe. However once I saw the preview I was horrified because of the bad makeup job. I mean there is no way of getting past that. I'm quite visually sensitive and was distracted by the terrible black face makeup. Why not leave her skin color alone?? That was dumb on the director's part. It actually adds insult to injury on an already sensitive issue. I knew plenty of other people like myself who didn't mind Zoe in the role but when the preview came out, they were equally horrified by the make-up job.....blacks, whites, Asians, Native Americans.....all make up my friendship circle and most all said the same.

You don't put someone in black face and expect the audience to take the movie seriously. You leave that for comedies like Tropic Thunder in which Robert Downney Jr donned black face and black folks loved it.
