One thing bugs me...

In the documentary they say that the human population is increasing exponentially in the past years because of the use of...oil? Because we use oil to produce more food and to transport the food etc...although this might be true..isn't the population also increasing because of a better living environment? Because of the technological advances in medicine? Because people that would have died in the past from certain diseases are now cured? Isn't that another way in which we manipulate nature? By tampering with natural selection? Anyway..nice documentary :D

I'll have to watch it again, because I didn't hear that claim at all. I heard that the population explosion was due mainly to the onset of the Industrial Revolution, which changed the way in which we live and also ushered in an era of more advanced understanding of hygenic issues, which led to extended life expectancy & a far lower infant mortality rate.

Well done. Now, think about the places that were temperate enough for farming. How, exactly, are they meant to function? Water will evaporate, crops will die. Eventually, everywhere would be little more than desert. Let's see you farm on that.

Think changing farming methods was mentioned. This initially has helped us to produce more food which helped feed an ever increasing population but over time the chemicals that are applied to get these gains in food production and the compaction of the soil by constant plowing and use of heavy machinery is counterproductive. Desertification is increasing and whether the tundra like soils that may be gained by a warming world will be able to replace the soils lost is debatable as they will probably not be a fertile as the land lost.

Actually oil is one of the big elements that made better living envinorment possible. Technology, medicine-developement. Many of these things that make our every-day lives better actually needs oil in a way or another.

In many cases oil is the "energy that keeps the wheels rolling"

If you want to live on cactus, go for it. Don't forget that scorpions are good protein. What do you plan to power your air conditioner with. It would be wiser to live underground like they do in parts of Australia.

Actually, the population explosion began with the advent of agriculture. This led to sedentary living and the growth of cities. It began increasing exponentially with the incorporation of petroleum to maxize growth yield and transportation.
