Uneducated Opinions or Proven Scientific Facts

Hello, I am a student at the unversity of manchester studying Earth Science and Climatology and currently in my final year. I have recently, out of sheer curiousity, been reading through some of these threads trying to find out what the publics viewpoint is on Climate Change.

A lot of the threads i have visited (not just on imdb) have been really eye-opening to the amount of uneductaed opinions for both pro and con arguments. I am also not happy about the majority of the publics opinions on scientists. Scientist are experts in their fields and should be treated with more trust when talking about relevant subjects. Science is not religion, where people can choose what to believe and follow, science consists of theories and proven facts. Leave it to the specialist scientists to debate which theory is more relevant to solving lifes mysteries. People should understand that science is the only way mankind will progress to being 'eco-friendly' and that the attempts of the goverments to reduce peoples carbon footprint will have little or no effect on slowing down the coming climate shift.

Throughout the history of the earth the climate has periodically changed naturally, whether it be through the proximity of the moons rotation to the earth (Milankovitch cycles), or through changes in the orientation of Earth's magnetic field (Geomagnetic reversal). Many people are unaware that we are in an ice age at the moment, the earth has not always had ice caps at the poles. The terminology for the current phase is an interglacial period, this means that the glaciers which once covered the Earth 14,000 years ago have receeded over time and sea levels risen.

Anyway i'm getting off topic, the why or the how does not matter, its the fact that its going to happen. The argument whether human influences on the climate (greenhouse effects) have sped up inevitable climate change are not relevent, it is just playing the blame game which will get us (the human race) no where in the long run. We as individuals are powerless in determining how the world collectively deals with the upcoming climate. I am not providing any answers to the current global problems but only the raw truth we has been taught to me by over 200 years of extensive research and intellectual collectivity.

Unlike the media and goverment i do not believe that scare-tactics and more ways in which to control peoples life-style are the best ways to adapt and evolve. I believe that education on relevant subjects (not business managment..etc) are the best chance the human race has at adapting to the inevitable change.

If anyone has any questions or would like me to explain any of my statments above, i would be happy to respond. But i do reccomend buying a GCSE level book on geology as an easy (and quite enjoyable) read on climate changes throughout time. And i'll leave you with one last phrase; 'Uniformitarianism' which means 'The present is the key to understanding the past, and by understanding the past we can better understand what will happen in the future', as we all know history has a habit of repeating itself.

Are you George Bush ? :) I guess I am right. The only facts in your statement are that Milankovitch cycles and Geomagnetic reversals exist. That we already know. Rest all of it is just a hypothesis.

I agree that nobody has claimed a 100% relation between CO2 emissions and global warming, but still, the correlation between them is too strong to ignore. Am sure you've not seen An Inconvenient Truth. If you have and still you say all what you've said - I believe "U r being paid not to understand" and so it'll be difficult to convince you :).

Sure there i'm not trying to disprove global warming or the effect of CO2 or other greenhouse gases. I am simply stating that it is irrelevant to try to reduce carbon footprints when climate change is impending and there are larger forces at work which can not be slowed. Effort should be concentrated on adapting rather than fighting the inevitable. Extinction of species is a natural event in the geological history of the earth, just look at K/T or P/T boundary evidence. Apapting and change is the natural process so i believe, in my opinion that people should spend less time finding something in which to place blame and think about how to adapt to the coming changes. But I mean its not going to happen in our generation or our childrens, childrens, childrens generation but sometime in our future.

PS Im a student and im in debt, so your theory on me "being paid not to understand" is quite far fetched. Im simply writing what has been taught to me by specialists in their field, one of those being Dr Claire Smith from the university of manchester who is currently in project SCORCHIO which aims to develop tools for analysing adaptation options in urban areas, with a particular emphasis on heat and human comfort in the built environment.

You realize that Al Gore doesn't even believe his own *beep* He takes private jets everywhere, is driven in a limo wherever he goes and owns 4 million dollar mansions none of which use solar power. The man is the definition of hypocrite. "An Inconvenient Truth" Was full of so much false history and *beep* theories given as fact that it makes the mind boggle. While many of his theories do have some backbone behind them none of them are to be called facts. There is no doomsday clock on "Global Warming". Al gore's documentary was mainly a political stunt. Anyone and everyone who has any idea what they are talking about will tell you how Al Gore did not deserve that Nobel Prize, he is a scam artist.
