A question about the very last scene - spoilers?

When "clair" wakes back up again at the gas station, at this point does he/she remember why he is reliving this? I couldn't quite tell, but I assumed that once he actually figured it out, he would remember from then on the reason.

I think that "clair" knows that he/she is stuck in this nightmarish cycle but whether "clair" knows exactly WHY he/she is stuck there is somewhat up in the air. What seems clear (and most important) is that "clair" realizes that he/she can't escape his/her fate and that the terrifying cycle will continue on and on despite his/her efforts to free his/herself from it. That is my take on it. I think the theory that Claire is actually Duke is more interesting if Claire never does fully understand her dual identity. It makes the nightmare more terrible and more urgent if she knows she can't escape being murdered by him and also doesn't realize that she is running in essence from herself. Man, this makes my head hurt. I don't think there is a really clear answer here frankly.

I think that his realization of what's going on is part of his "hell experience" so to speak. It's much worse to be aware of a horrible situation than just living in one. When he was trying figure out what was going on there wasn't any certainty to his fate which gives a little bit of hope and to take that away in the last scene is incredibly cruel and I think that's what they were going for.

It was just Duke. The entire film is his torture in hell for eternity. He has to relive those days over and over. Claire isn't actually *in* the movie, it's just the thoughts of the killer being played non stop.

Most likely "Claire" will continue to remember and forget. Since he/she is in Hell, the scenario that causes the most torment is what he/she will experience.

hm good question. i feel like not knowing, the confusion would add to the hellish experience even more. but im not sure, it seemed as if "she" knew, but i guess it's open to the viewers interpretation - probably whatever seems more nightmarish to you, the viewer, is the answer to your question. god this movie is my worst nightmare

hell is certainly an interesting, scary concept thats for sure. i would like to think that the last scene where he figured it out, the next time it started over would begin with a clean slate and he would have to figure it all out again. there is no "lesson" to learn in hell, at least in the bible it suggests that there is no redemption, and no chance (in hell?) of leaving. therefore there is no reason for you to figure anything out.

perhaps im looking into this way too much, and i can't really assume what a soul feels versus what a human body feels. but maybe if you knew what was happening to you for eternity, there could be a possibility of you numbing yourself to the pain because you know what to expect. it could be possible that a cycle must occur to perpetuate the confusion, dementia, and physical pain most effectively

yeah it's deep that after all that it was actually Duke himself but reliving the events that claire went through and what she felt and everything, he did some sick s*** to her man I was like crenging and I never do that never haha, but yep that was his punishment, his hell, very deep I liked it ^_^.
