Brazen hucksterism

OK, more than half of the people who voted on this film's quality rated it a "10." Obviously (to me at least) only the director or his momma could regard this film so highly. It must be that people associated with the production are told/asked to vote in this way. I would be embarrassed if I had anything to do with this movie.

Or, it could be that people like this film and are moved to vote for it. And that people who aren't going to like it aren't likely to bother to buy a ticket in the first place. But, whatever.

OR it could be that it is a good movie and that some people aren't intellectual enough to enjoy it

I don't know the director, his mother or any of the people featured in or connected with the movie. I gave it a 10.

Can you say why you didn't like it? As a convenience, if you can't say anything other than "it sucked" or "it was stooooopid", you don't need to bother writing anything. We'll just assume those are your answers.

This is just an understood flaw in IMDb's voting. Subjectivity can be like that.

I have rated nearly 700 movies and only given three of them a "10," eighteen of them a "9," and only ten of them a "1".
Some people vote only "10" or "1". Some people assume each movie starts as a "10" and remove points for things they don't like. Some may start at "5".

We all have a method to our madness.

In general, though, I agree that too many movies get a "10" or a "1" that clearly don't deserve it. I hated Kubrick's "2001" and gave it a "4". (Maybe it should have gotten a "5," but I recognize that it has some merits that keep it from being a "1".)

That's my two cents.

While I ardently disagree with your example, you are right on about the voting system. A "10," for me, would indicate something profound, life-changing, and almost completely unrivaled. Most of these idiots give it to anything that comes down the creek, they're so easily satisfied. Either that, or it's a "1," for those movies that demand input from the viewer, most of whom are unable or unwilling to do so. It's called differentiation.

Too few votes have been cast, and the box has obviously been stuffed. I've seen this with some pretty lame movies--like movies you've never heard of, but somehow have like ten thousand votes for them, almost all nine and ten--yet you happened to see the flick and it's worse than Plan 9 From Outerspace. Yeah, as if. It's not IMDB, they try to correct for it. It's morons that know how to work it and have nothing else to do. The giveaway on this movie is 5 low votes. Also note, there's only a handful of votes at 7/8, and an absolute metric assload of them at 9/10, yet the movie is rated as a 7-8 overall.
Whenever the votes look absurdly skewed, you can figure there's something up. When you hear people whine about the way IMDB weights their system, remember this flick, and wonder how much money they have invested in this movie.
As time goes on, however, the truth is generally told. What we're looking at is the results of a handbill in the break area of the studio that says "Everyone reading this log on to IMDB and vote ten for this movie."

Just like being in the second grade.

Remember that every movie starts out with the average rating (about 7) and goes up or down from there.

My friend and I have discussed our individual prejudices when voting. Personally, I assume a uniform distribution of movies (i.e. 10% of movies deserve a "1" rating, 10% deserve a "2", 10% deserve a "3" and so forth) whereas my friend votes in kind of a bell curve distribution (e.g. an "average" movie rates about a 7 and almost no movies rate a 1 or a 10). De gustibus non est disputandum.

I know there are a lot of crap movies that IMDB users rate highly (to avoid the inevitable argument I won't go into all of them here), but I really don't think Wordplay is one of them. Personally, I gave it a 9, but if I had voted the night I saw it I might have 10'd it. Movies that are this entertaining and genuine are very hard to come by, so I have no problem with folks going over the top if they feel so moved.

I'm giving it a 10, and I know no one in it personally and have no commercial interested or anything like that. I just really enjoyed it, and I enjoy Crossword Puzzles, and I am amazed such a fine, entertaining movie could be made about something that is basically a solitary pursuit that could look as interesting as grass growing in the wrong filmmaker's hands.

I do think the audience for ths film self selects--people who wouldn't like it probably won't see it.

But I think this whole strand is misguided for this particular film. It's a very good film.

It's very good, but is it really '10' good? Not to crap on another's opinion, but ratings that high should be for flawless films, and this isn't even a flawless documentary. I agree with the one poster who said that most people probably just vote '10' or '1', rather than actually considering what they should truly rate it.

People vote for what they like....ACCEPT THAT!! Not how well it is made or the "art" or skill. Did "they" enjoy it!!! and how much. And the one persons comment on changing your vote/opinion later, fits with me. Some movies I hated as a teenager, I now love. And many I loved years ago now seem weak..

Vote are from Crossword lovers and documentry lovers.... The horror action lovers were mostly somewhere else and never saw this. You may think Pokemon is a 2, but a 10 year gives a 10. What did it mean to them! Say thanks that we all don't love the same things. What a boring world that would be.

Embarrassed to have anything to do with this film? What a bizarre thing to say. It's kind of like going to see the Emerson String Quartet and being embarrassed to be there.

If you have a legitimate complaint about the ratings for this film, make your point succinctly and in a civilized manner. Comments like your last one make me immediately disregard any of your legitimate comments.

huckster: "a person who works in the advertising industry, esp. one who prepares aggressive advertising for radio and television."

Not sure how this applies.

Since we're pointing out the failings of IMDb's message boards, I'll say what's been bugging me here. It's a shame that unproductive and juvenile comments are allowed to proliferate as much as they do here. IMDb could be, should be a wonderful place to discuss the intracacies of film, tv shows, video games and what not. Instead too often discussions spiral into topics like who's hot, how stupid that actor is or how lame that movie is, with no supporting argument.

If members were required to take a mature approach to the discussions here, the atmosphere and overall quality of the boards would improve vastly. Perhaps this place needs more, and more aggressive moderators.

And I suppose you think that 95% of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes are all relatives or on the payroll as well? :-P

It's one of the most highly rated movies of the year (by professional film critics)... obviously that doesn't mean that you will enjoy it personally, but clearly a LOT of other people are seeing something in it that you don't. Just accept that instead of making ridiculous conspiracy claims.
