So many lefties!

Did anyone notice how many of the people interviewed doing the crossword puzzles were lefties? They are about 10% of the general population, but looked to be closer to half of the major interviewees in the movie.

I could respond two ways. I could point out that it takes intelligence to be a good crowwsord puzzle player, and therefore they're more likely to be lefties (since lefties obviously are smarter).

Or I could point out what a tard you are for thinking that lefties are only 10% of the population.

Nice observations, Cameron. ;)

In reality, as far as the statistics are concerned (and studies that have been performed where applicable), as intelligence (as can be measured) or amount of education (where intelligence isn't directly measured) increases, so does the likelyhood of being progressive. (aka "lefties") Call it coincidence if you want, but I tend to think when there is a strong correlation, it usually indicates something noteable.

Well, I'm a righty--but my Mom told me I started out as a lefty. I changed over at about six years of age. Wonder why? I am a lefty politically though--and proud! Does anybody else's blood pressure rise about forty points with the NY Time's Saturday puzzle--that's a killer! Most times I think it is harder than the Sunday.

Great observation! I noticed that immediately with Jon Stewart and Bill Clinton. With a background in neuroscience, it didn't surprise me that lefties were predominant among the puzzle solvers. The public editor did say that musicians and any profession which required spatial and quantitative analysis were the most likely groups to excel at crossword puzzles. This completely supports right-sided brain dominance.

As for the demographics of left-handedness, wiki does cite 8-15% of the adult population are left-handed, so you are spot on there. Check out the list of famous left-handed people in history and pop culture...

I told my friend after we saw this "I bet it won't play too well in those red states."

Left handedness v. Liberalism

I also noticed all the lefties immediately.

It's my understanding, though, that a lot of the left brain/right brain stuff is not true. In reality, we use both sides of our brain to do most tasks.

Also, according to popular myth, people who are supposedly right brain-leaning (and thus left handed) are more artistic and creative, and righties more analytical. This would be inconsistent with the contention that people who tend to do best at crosswords are musicians and mathemetically-oriented people, if you believe that lefties are better at crosswords. According to right brain/left brain myth, musicians should tend to be left handed, while mathematically oriented folks would tend to be right handed.

Anyway, my point was that I think the whole left brain/right brain thing has been revealed to mostly be myth.

Yes, I noticed this (being left-handed, I tend to look to see who else is). I also have a theory that left-handed people are attracted to solitary hobbies. I work in the stamp industry, and I have noticed an extrmeely high percentage of stamp collectors are left-handed. I wonder why.

OK I have to apologize. I know this was an old post. But when you talked about "lefties" I thought you were using the term for liberals, not left-handed people (which is why I called you a "tard" for thinking that it only applied to 10% of the population). So please accept my apologies on that front.

As a side note, I do stick with my assertion that liberals tend to be more intelligent than conservatives, even if my misunderstanding of your post suggests otherwise ;)

No, that's not my belief system. But I do believe that ON AVERAGE in the vast spectrum of human experience a lack of intelligence is one factor that will tend to lead to conservative beliefs. Of course there are smart conservatives and dumb liberals. But I do think that if you forced me to pick between which of two people is more intelligent, I'm gonna pick the liberal over the conservative and take the safe bet.

Also I would love to point out the irony in your post, wherein you boast of your intelligence and then state that you hate arrogant people.

The word "lefties" is semantically ambiguous. I read it the same way you did and thought the first post was ridiculous. It wasn't really a foolish assumption.

Is that supposed to be funny or racist? Because right now you're just looking like an ass to me.

Five years old, but I had to post. I saw this movie for the first time today, and immediately noticed the left -handedness. As the child of two lefties, I keep a running list of left -handed people. For only 10% of the population, lefties comprise a great many in the popular culture. President Obama, Judy Garland, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander and Woody Allen among other are LH. Btw as a child of two lefties, I am a righty.
