Am I the only one disgusted by Shelly?

I didn't read through all the pages of posts, just a couple and not once did I read about Shelly. I thought she was VERY manipulative. I also could sense attention seeker written alllllover her. For one thing, the pills. Saying they were Polly's well, that's just either you thought it was right or you didn't, but nobody looked at the fact that Shelly asked for them. And telling about the tattoo? i'd like to know what purpose that served other than to get Polly in trouble. It was irrelevent. Getting a tattoo isn't going to hinder recovery, what do they think she'll shover her stomach through the wound? I mean come on! Also the ciggarette thing. I think the 2 other girls only admited to it to get Polly in trouble again. I noticed a lot of that. Yea Polly lied about it, but who wouldn't? I absolutely could not stand Shelly. I did not get even an ounce of 'real-ness' from her. And I really hated that they put her on the cover. There's more things, but I feel I've gone on long enough, she doesn't deserve the attention she's already gotten.

I have to agree with you about that as I got that feeling about her as well. When I went online to see some of the deleted scenes from the documentary there was one where they were all in a group talking about the physicall affects of anorexia. Looking at Shelly in this scene gave me the feeling of that she was happy that she was able to be anorexic and liked the attention. I just see smiles on her face when there really shouldn't be any at times like talking about those compression things they put on their legs. Ugh! I don't know I just think there was something fishy about her!

Yeah I loathed her too. She kind of reminded me of my mother, very attention seeking, whiny, self-centered, and manipulative. She doesn't think of anyone but herself. "Waaahhhhh, I'm in sooooooooooooooo MUCH PAIN!!!!!!! I don't care if other people are in pain!"

reply

My jaw dropped when they said Polly needed to be dismissed.

I agree with you 100% and I'm so happy that there are people out there that can see right through *beep*

Shelly was a drama queen and not to mention, very very boring. Her and the blonde girl bored me to tears. Polly and the girl with the ED mom were the only two characters I found to be actually human. Not to mention intelligent.

Yeah she pissed me off royally when she ratted on Polly. She was just as much to blame as Polly. And the place is about recovery and not about punishment. Shelly should have focused on herself.

i can't stand her. she's a narcissist and would CONSTANTLY interrupt people to talk about herself.

Yall have got it all wrong! I felt for Shelly. SHe was convicted of her lying and she decided not to be dishonest anymore. Yes, she willingly took the pills but Polly needed to take responsibilty for her actions too! She wasn't going to though. So instead of being in a bad situation and being torn between her friend and the recovery, she did what she felt she had to do. And about the tattoos...that was just an extension of the process Shelly had to go through to be more honest and open with people. Whether it was relevant to the recovery or not, it was their rules (dumb rules I might add), but Shelly felt bad for keeping the secret and she was trying to take care of herself. She was looking out for herself. Which, in their situation, is not bad. They are in that clinic to focus on themselves. Otherwise, how are they going to get better if they keep pushing back feelings and hiding things?!

I think that Shelly showed a killer survival instinct. It's certainly not attractive but it just might be what ultimately helps her recover. But it was really stupid to play hooky just to get tattoos.

I suspect the no-tattoo rule was connected with the hospital's liability insurance coverage. Tattoos can and do become infected, and the immune systems of the patients were probably not very strong.

They didn't want anything they could be sued over to happen to the girls while they were legally in the hospital's custody.

What's really weird to me is that we're told she had another tube when she was young (before the tube was put in her stomach), and it's said in such a way to make it sound like it was nothing! I wish I knew more about that part of Shelly's life.

Was you ever bit by a dead bee?

reply

Yes, I disliked her.

Polly was an arrogant and disrespectful trouble maker who perhaps tried too hard to be the "cool big sister"- but Shelley was a sniveling and aggravating bitch.

Polly was thrown under the bus, though it was mostly her own doing.

Its called scapegoating. Its disgusting. Look up scapegoating in dysfunctional family dynamics - it happens in almost any hierachical setting and Polly died. Absolutely shameful.

I'm sorry, but Polly and her antics were ruining the community. She was lying, encouraging the smoke porch rules (talking numbers, staff bashing, etc.), giving her medication to other people, and encouraging patients to lie for her all while pretending to be the good patient. It's all of these things that caused her to get kicked out. Her behavior wasn't going to change, therefore the chances of her really recovering were slim to none.
