The Lesson of Rick's Story

I have read alot of point of views on this board suggesting that Rick is just a selfish guy anyway and drugs had little to do with his problems. But to suggest that ignores the damage drugs can do. I think it was very unselfish for him to share these films. The beginning starts out very light. But it changes and it is very, very painful to watch. Drug addiction effects every aspect of your life and your personality. His wife played the enabler role to perfection. There are moments when you actually get a chance to watch his personality change as he gets high. Thank God the film ended as it did. I wouldn't want my life on film, good and bad; shared with the world. So I believe it was very courageous for Rick to release these. It shows very clearly what drug addiction can do to to your life. I guess maybe I just can relate to this guys life. The effect this all has on the kids will follow all involved for the rest of their lives. And the worst part of it for Rick is to live each day knowing how his mistakes effected all the other people in his life every day. I choose not to judge Rick but I don't feel sorry for him either. He wouldn't want anyone to feel sorry for him. Instead I choose to view this film as a gift to society. Teenagers should watch this film. It's way too easy to fall into the trap of addiction. Thank You and Good Luck Rick!

Yeah, I agree. I think video was his line to reality however stretched and tenuous it was, he tried to maintain it.

I don't think his wife played the enabler, or I don't understand how you mean that. She was a typical Texas housewife, a sheltered girl who marries the man of the world having no idea what that means. She just wanted to stay home and have kids and be a mom, probably like her mom, and she played the role.

What enabled Rick was his work who knew about him for years before the fired him. They even gave him a chance with rehab, but it didn't take. There is also probably a lot more to this story that other people would not let him share, so he had to base it around videos of himself and his POV.

Nevertheless, a very interesting movie.
