A Woman Hating Her Own Body

I found it disturbing to hear the female lead say that she thinks that vaginas are disgusting (while she's admitting to her boyfriend that she lied about having a lesbian experience), especially considering that she HAS one. Maybe that's the (male) writer's own feeling being projected onto this character or maybe someone, somewhere, actually thought this was somehow a funny line-
But can you imagine some male character saying that he thinks penises are gross .... I can't.

Earlier in the movie, I was put off by the line likening sex without a penis to "a sandwich without the meat" but I was willing to let that go until the vagina hating line. That was enough of this movie for me-

I know it's an edgy comedy and there were certainly funny moments before I stopped watching but the slash of misogyny doesn't work for me.

I can. I imagine a lot of heterosexual males think other guys' penises are gross. It doesn't mean they hate their own bodies.

And "misogyny" is such an overused buzzword.

I found that more disturbing than ...you know!

I agree that 'misogyny' is an overused buzzword these days.

Tons of women find their own sex organs 'disgusting' for various reasons, I know a few. It's not to say that they wish they had the alternative but it's just the way they are, the way they've conditioned themselves. A little research goes a long way...

First of all, misogyny is not the disliking of a female body part. It's the dislike, hatred of mistrusting of women in general.

Next, its normal for a woman to be turned off by another woman's vagina. Same goes for guys and the penis.

Saying that having sex without a penis is like have a sandwich without meat is a pretty accurate statement, coming from a normal heterosexual woman. Her character was in no way misogynistic; as for the writer. Who knows? But this is not evidence of that. A normal man would relate more to a woman who was turned off by sex or sexual organs from another woman.

This whole scene was to show that her boyfriend was a perv. He was disappointed that she didn't have those perverted tendancies like him. Ironic that he was ok and even excited about her possibly being a lesbian. But then hated her for doing this one dumb thing. The way he wanted to watch... you know... showed that he was hoping for a threesome down the road a ways. So he was a perverted idiot. She was a wonderful woman who did something stupid. Like we all do... sort of.

You mean like transsexuals?I think you're thinking of body dysmorphic disorder.

...overused buzz word? .... Misogyny?

Don't think so-

Perhaps it's the term "buzz word" that's overused-

I'm pretty sure she meant OTHER vaginas are gross. I'm a guy, but I can relate. My crank is fricking awesome! Other dudes' cranks? Not so much...

I'm a guy and I think penises are gross.

Hell, I think mine is pretty gross, really. It's no worse than average or anything and it doesn't bother me because it's mine, but if I look at it objectively... the penis isn't a thing of beauty. It's just a functional piece of anatomy.

And I've encountered plenty of women who feel the same way about vaginas.

Art is a lie that tells the truth.

Nobody thinks that was just her way of saying she didn't like women; that she didn't really sleep with the woman she told him about?

The OP is like it's been written by someone who's never actually spoken to humans.

Plenty of straight girls think vaginas are gross. My current girlfriend says the same thing. As far as guys go, most straight guys will at least pretend they think all penises are gross. As a guy myself, I think penises are ... not gross, necessarily, but certainly goofy. I think vaginas are ace, however.

It's got nothing to do with hating your own body, nor does it have anything to do with the director's attitude towards women. There's nothing remotely misogynistic in this film. In fact, it has a far stronger female lead than most comedies. I don't think it's a great film, but you've not raised one valid criticism here.
