what I find disingenuous about this film is...

... the implication this happens only in the southern United States, not all thru it. The director especially targets Mississippi. He discusses the murder of Scotty Weaver and never mentione the murder occured in Alabama, but implies Mississippi.

The same with the bigoted preacher, he's from Kansas as is his church. but the movie implies otherwise.

This kind of bigotry occurs all thru the country in rural towns (even in NY state).

Yeah, I see what you mean.
I grew up in Raymond, MS. Not really sure what I think. Part of me is ticked off because Mississippi is THE place to go when you want to find intolerance. Nevermind that it exists everywhere.

I wasn't aware of the Scotty Weaver story, but it does give the impression that it happened in MS. I was aware of Rev. Fred Phelps. His church is in Kansas, but as the film points out, he's from Meridian. His church seems to go where ever they can find a place or an issue to protest.

I agree. I grew up in a small town in the Pacific Northwest with one gay bar. This is what it was like.

You were never ever allowed to disrespect the police, period. When they came in for whatever reason it was always Yes Sir, Yes Sir no matter if they behaved or acted like total *beep*

The bar never advertised because that attracted bashers to the neighborhood where the bar was located.

We were not allowed to touch each other period. You never knew if there was an undercover cop in there looking to bust someone for solicitation.

This all happened in the mid 1980's.

I don't think the film implies that at all. Anyone with sense knows that homophobia (as well as sexism and racism) are everywhere. It's just that it's definitely more prevalent in the South. For some reason, that region generally rejects evolution (literally and figuratively).

Scotty Weaver had been to Crossroads, with entertainers from where he lived so he had a connection. That preacher from Kansas is originally from Meridian, Mississippi which is were Crossroads was.

It's true the director only chose mississippi but the title, 'Small Town Gay Bar' seems to imply this is an issue in all small towns and not exclusive to the south.
