Frenchy Suprise

I know the genders were separated a lot back then but what person couldn't tell Frency was a girl. I mean gimme a break, she had boobs and everything. After all, pirates spent as much time with whores as they could manage, so it's not like they NEVER saw women.

You gotta think... it was all in the casting! The real Frenchy (if there really was one) probably was a VERY masculine woman that would fool the most discerning eyes! Think about it, how many 'women' have you seen in your life that could pass for men? I've seen a few that even sounded manly! Heck, there's even a few men that have passed as women!! It doesn't take much searching on the internet to find either one!!!

You definitely have a point rlnutt. There are women who could pass for men, just not the actress they picked to play Frenchy. I've read about women pirates who didn't come out until they were discovered to be pregnant or something like that. Real women on Pirate ships probably had more sense than to wear form fitting clothing without layers. Actually, Frenchy was androgynous enough until she started wearing clothes that clung to her shape.

Anne Bonny & Mary Read were active throughout the Caribbean.

It probably never even occured to them there pirates ooar that a woman would go into piracy perhaps? As women would surely realise that if they were discoveed they'd be raped and probably keel hauled, which would....not be fun.

If they weren't looking for it, they wouldn't see it. Pirates (with the exception of Blackbeard and er.....Jack Sparrow....) don't strike me as the brightest crayons in the box. Plus yea, she was very much androgynous!

You'd be surprised. A good number of women served as male soldiers and sailors are were recorded in history books - Christian Cavanaugh/Davies (Mother Ross), Phoebe Hessell and the Royal Marine Hannah Snell. They weren't discovered until much later in their service careers, sometimes not at all.

I think a number of them had either smaller breasts or were pretty flat chested plus uniforms/coats DO tend to cover some of the curves. They related that they would tie handkerchiefs around their necks to cover their breasts if needed (like if they were flogged or had to be operated on).

Later they would taunt their ex comrades: "Mr.Smith, if you knew who was with you beneath the sheets you would have come to closer quarters than you dared" said one of them.
