why not grow something else (like food)?

that would reduce supply driving up the price. don't forget columbia also grows coffee. many countries produce it. not every consumer demands 'golden' coffee. most just want a caffein fix to get them through the day or at least get started. what about corn that they eat? is the crop grown decide by govt? if so that's the problem. over specializing isn't good for the little guy.

if they reduce by half the coffee grown (and grow food like corn, veggies, and fruits instead on that land, the price would have to raise a little and there would be no famine as they would grow food along with coffee.

why not?

because it is a cash crop.

the farmers in the 3rd world do not own the land they farm. coffee makes the land more profitable than sharecropping. if you think preventing starvation is foremost on the minds of the land owners then there is no point attempting a protracted explanation why not.

I`m just one of those people, I basically need a fix to be able to study all day and all night long for my exams, I don`t even drink coffee often during my exam-free time.

You`re asking the wrong questions, though. Simple farmers will plant that which gives them the highest profit. They would plant only weed if it was legal. If you own a small piece of land you, wouldn`t plant corn just to raise the coffee price, after all you will be producing corn, not coffee, right?
