Guy got lost in volcano in Hawaii in 300,000 acres? How?!

I cannot understand how anyone could get lost in 300,000 acres. That's 1,200 sq. km. To put this into perspective, if this area was circular, it would be about 40km in diameter. In other words, one could walk from one side to the other in about 8 hours. Now someone explain to me how anyone could get lost in an area this small? All he would have to do is pick one direction and keep walking in that direction and eventually he'd get out of the lava field and into civilization!

He had it in his mind that the oasis was his only survival option so he did not want to take a chance by leaving too far and not making it back or finding the oasis again.

Also humans are unable to walk straight without a form of a straight path provided by a trail or something to that nature. 90% of humans use one of their legs more than the other while walking. For example, if they are left handed they will most likely end up walking slowly to the left even though it may seem to be a straight path.

The main thing is the oasis though. He had no idea about the landscape.

I can't believe it, yet again, in the episode "Lost in the Jungle", a guy gets lost in not 300,000 acres, but 200,000!! To put it another way, if the guy was in the middle of this jungle and walked for 16 km (10 miles), he would be out of there.
