The episode with the scientist

I don't remember the exact details but there was one episode where Lewis fell in love with one scientist and she was making a research about something Lewis had, from the girls.

It bugged me how the episode treated the scientist as a villain, she was just doing her job. Sure, she lied to Lewis a little, but she told him everything later and it didn't seem like she planned to trick him or anything. She found something that could be revolutionary, she didn't knew anything about the mermaids, but the girls act like she's evil or something, just because she's a scientist who has something from them.

I know they must keep their secret, but what's with the twisted sense of justice etc.?

Imagine yourself in their shoes. What would you feel like if someone found out something like that about you?

And the episode in question is The Denman Affair :D

reply

She definitely starts out as just a good scientist, but she becomes obsessed with this project and crosses a line. Lying to Lewis was just the beginning. (If you haven't seen episode 29, "Dr. Danger", the next line contains spoilers.) Then she kidnapped him, stole his phone, captured the girls and would have done more if they hadn't stopped her.

Please don't feed the trolls.

Dr. Denman put bars over the only exit from the moon pool, trapping the girls inside. You think that's not evil?

reply

There was putting the bars on the moon pool exit and I'm pretty sure she would have been happy enough to send the girls off to a laboratory where loads more scientists would discover their secret. And this would have all been for Denman's gain. So she could show the world what she's 'discovered'

Then Rikki, Emma and Cleo would never have normal lives again.

Instead of tricking Denman in the final episode, the should have shoved her into the moon pool on the full moon. Hopefully she'd become a mermaid herself and then have no choice but to keep quiet and realize herself how hard it would be to keep a secret like that.

The problem with that scenario is that it assumes Denman would have the practical foresight to know how bad things would be for her if she divulged her secret to the scientific community and that it would overpower her immediate desire for money and fame.

"Mom! The toilet's in love with Andy!"

reply

As long as non of the other scientists saw (if Denman did become a mermaid) I imagine she would keep the secret and agree to leave the others alone.

She would probably end up doing what Rikki does in Mako Mermaids. Dive in the deep and search for rare and priceless things that scuba-divers couldn't get to and make her money from that.
