Why did Brigitte pay Big Man to be there?

OK, I realize no one has posted on this board in almost a year, but I rewatched TitC recently and one thing stood out to me that I never considered before: when James first discovers Big Man in his house, Big Man says the person who payed him to be there would kill him if he ratted him out. Then, a little while later, Brigitte says, "I admit it; I paid him," but doesn't explain why. If she really were in love with Big Man (which it's never revealed that she *isn't*), why would she have to pay him to be at her house? Is it supposed to be that she loves him but he doesn't love her, like she's just been using him as a paid escort but fell in love with him? I'm so confused by this.
