Season 3?

Does anybody know if it is gonna be picked up for a third season?

CTV has not made any announcement regarding a third season for Whistler and there has been no speculation in the Canadian TV industry media either. Right now, Whistler is "off the radar". Given the time frame of the show's primary backdrop story (snowboarding is a winter, early spring sport), and given that pre-production for a TV series like Whistler requires about 2 months, the show couldn't possibly go into production for a third season until March at the earliest, assuming it was given a go-ahead for a third season by the end of January. So, that would force the show to focus on stories outside of snowboarding season.

CTV has commissioned two new Canadian-made drama shows that will premiere this fall (one of which stars former Whistler star David Paetkau) so it's possible that if the network is going to produce a third season of Whistler, it would probably be targetted for the winter broadcast season which would mean a January 2009 premiere. This would also mean the show wouldn't probably go into production until April or May.

I am keeping my ears to the ground, so to speak, for any information about the series. If I hear anything definitive from my resources, I'll let everyone know.

According to a CTV press release, the two shows are:

Sniper: A tense, emotional police drama that takes us into the lives of the team members of the Strategic Response Unit (SRU) of the Toronto Police. They're unique cops who can do what ordinary cops can't: rescue hostages, bust gangs, defuse bombs, handle state-of-the-art weaponry, always putting their own lives at stake to save others. This is the series David Paetkau will be starring in.

The Listener: A young paramedic with the power to listen to people's most intimate thoughts. Our hero soon realizes: With great power comes great responsibility. Still, he's got to admit that this telepathy can be pretty cool. Aided by his paramedic partner, Toby walks a dangerous line between his calling as a telepathic sleuth and his regular life as an urban twentysomething. Toby's adrenaline-fuelled job and his active social life complicate the hell out of his destiny - or maybe it's the other way around.

Both series premiere in Canada on CTV in the Fall of 2008. Neither has been sold to an American network, cable or broadcast, yet.

Since my previous post, Flashpoint (formerly Sniper) got picked up by CBS and The Listener got picked up by NBC. Both series will continue to be seen in Canada by CTV. Both series will continue to be set in Toronto, neither will be altered specifically for American audiences.

Also, there is a possibility that CBS and NBC respectively may air these series during the summer instead of the fall.

Okay.
Thank you.
You were very helpful.

Wow when is it that a Canadian show gets picked up by one of the major American stations and aired in prime time?

reply

No further episodes of Whistler will be produced beyond the 26 already filmed.

Hi:

Really glad you enjoyed our series. It is definitely a shame that there won't be a third season. There were actually some beginning plans for a Season 3 but it never reached the point where any of that planning was completed.

The main reasons the series wasn't renewed were two. One was that the ratings for Whistler in Canada were not really good, especially in the second season (the year I was involved with the show). The second reason was that, at the time, it was the most expensive Canadian-owned drama series to make and CTV felt that it couldn't justify the expense when the show was doing so poorly in the ratings.

But several of the people involved with Whistler continue to be around in other projects. Among them, Amanda Crew (Carrie) has a new movie coming out in a week or so called "Sex Drive" and David Paetkau (Beck) stars in the hit CBS/CTV police drama Flashpoint which just finished its first season and is getting ready to film Season 2.

If you live in Canada, MTV2 is now running the first season of Whistler several times a week and hopefully the second season as well. So the show will live on in reruns for at least a while longer.

Thanks for your support. I know all of the folks who made Whistler would appreciate your watching the show while it was on the air.

Thanks for all the inside information !

I have seen quite a few series over the years and I honestly think Whister was one of the best.
The chemistry between the actors was just great, and every episode a lot of things happened (Grey's Anatomy for example covers the same stuff in 1 season while Whistler did it in 1 episode...)

Too bad the masses, the big group of people who do what others do, didn't dig it.
Welcome to the world where everything is about quantity and not quality.

It's about time people learn how to see quality again.

So, if there's not going to be a season 3, then how do we know what happens at the end? Are we suppost to guess their fate? Do Jen McKay and Peter Varland die, or do they just get injured? What does Griff do when he finds out that Quin and Carrie still like eachother? Does Carrie ever find out that Adrian isn't her real father, but her half brother? I am really sad that they aren't making a third season!

The answer to your question is that sadly yes we must guess and speculate what happens but the definitive answers to these questions will never be known.
