This film has had great reviews, 95% on Rotten Tomatoes - better than Election. Since it's been packaged as "Triad Election" in the West, with no allusions to an earlier film, I wondered if I need to see the first one, or if I can skip ahead to this one?
[Oh...hell. I don't know if it was just coming on the night after the first showing of To's virtual Wild Bunch tribute Exiled but these two films, with their deliberate (Coppola inspired?) pace, low action and, let's say, challenging narrative (nothing to give the average HK fan pause, but for the heathens...), could be said to have recieved a rocky reception at the IIFF.
The crowd was restless from the start, whispering amongst themselves frequently with evident confusion. The dropoff in attendance from the screening of the first film to the sequel was dramatic, going from a healthy size crowd to, well, me and about five other people.
It's too bad. I personally wouldn't exactly call either movie a masterpiece, but they are two pretty strong triad movies.]
Thanks very much for the link. I can kind of understand the drop-off though; I don't think I'd want to watch even the Godfather 1 and 2 back-to-back! I'll definitely be checking out Triad Election now.
I definately recommend seeing the 1st one. Unlike many of the other people, I think the first one is slightly better, they're both really good though. The first one is amazing! See them both.
election 2 is a better film, election 2 is showing how government and politics are in HK. i think chinese government wont allow this movie to play in china unless censor it or change something
i understand why this movie is called election in english title. chinese title means "dark society". i was wondering why english title is called election but after i watched the movie i know.
I'm surprised people are calling either film average, I saw Election 1 and then Election 2 within a 2 day time frame on Superchannel and it was a great experience. If there was anything that made the first film worse was that the eventual winner of the 'election' was barely highlighted, it was never clear why they chose him to begin with. Though by the end it was a bit more clear. Election 2 gave the audience the gang war they probably wanted in Election 1 but never got.
