Why the accent?

Just saw this movie. Good, though not consistently so.

However, one thing really bothered me: why make a character Danish (for no apparent reason other than for him to be Danish) if you’re going to speak in a German-ish accent throughout the entire movie?

What’s the point? Why not just make him German, then? Or learn what a Dane actually sounds like?
