Coens with Clooney again?

According to Empire Online, http://www.empireonline.co.uk/news/story.asp?NID=17561 the Coen Brothers are teaming up with George Clooney again on this, only this time Clooney is going to direct the dark comedy.

Nononononononononono! THE HORROR! After twisting Kaufman's vision in "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" I don't trust him. I like "Confessions..." but it wasn't a Kaufman film.

Bless me, father, for I have just killed quite a lot of men.

Kaufman didn't WRITE a Kaufman film... He wrote a faithful adaptation of a book, and Clooney directed it brilliantly.

I concur

But what Clooney did with Good Night , Good Luck was brilliant!

"Confessions" wasn't a typical Kaufamn film because Kaufman didn't write a typical Kaufman film. The Madness was missing.
But Clooney made the best out of it, it's a good film with a good story, well acted and very well directed. It just wasn't "Kaufmanesque" which doesn't automatically make it a bad film. Be careful with your expectations....

I asked myself one question: If the Coens wrote it, why don't the Coens direct it as well? Do they feel like it isn't ggod enough to be a "Coen Bros. film"?

I agree with the Kaufman statements. Kaufman didn't WANT to write a Kaufman auteur film, he was writing an adaptation, one that has some of his style and is brilliant, but that is something different.
Clooney very flashily directed it, also brilliantly, but definitely showed that it was still his first film I thought
Good Night and Good Luck was absolutely and completely amazing.
I'm hoping this is as well, if it gets made.

I read that they were going to direct it, pre production started, they cast George Clooney in a part, but something happened, and they had to push it off. After a while the Coens started to lose interest in it, but Clooney didn't, so he asked if he could direct it, which the Coens decided to allow.

Apparently the Coens have mountains of scripts that they do not get around to directing. I personally am curious to see how a Coen Brothers movie would turn out with someone else directing.

well they did co-write and not direct Crimwave, but that was still more of a Sam Raimi film anyway

He's more of a mild hero, you know, like the kind of sauce you get at Japanese restaurants

Kaufman isnt a director, he is a writer, there is such thing as a kaufman script but no such thing as a kaufman film, a key reason why kaufman scripts appear a certain way on film is because there are only two peopole who have directed his scripts before, spike jones and gondry, clooney has a very VERY different style of directing then those two who have similar ways of doing things. Kaufman wouldnt have sold the script to clooney if he expected a gondry style film...he would have sold it to gondry. Clooney will do a great job as usual.

The best part about imdb message boards is that most people don't know what the hell they're talking about or how to talk about it in the first place.

Everyone in this thread has done a great job of exemplifying this. Thanks!

I've heard something to the point that the Coen's & Mr. Clooney will be shoot the film in the Coen brother's home state of Minnesota this summer. Has anyone eles reported that or is it just another rumor:

reply

Yes, I saw them interviewed on local TV in Minnesota. It's about their childhood in St. Louis Park(also Al Franken's home town) Minnesota. The interviewer asked what type of people they'll be looking for as extras, in unison they replied "Jews". St.Louis Park has a fairly sizeable Jewish community for suburban Minnesota.

A thing about Clooney. I haven't seen Leatherheads, but I suspect it has more to do with creating a new wonderful romantic screwball comedy. So, I don't think it will be up to par with either.

Good Luck may be the closest to a Masterpiece so far, but I have a nagging feeling that Clooney will be a very important director in the future. The Coens have faith in him, so more than likely he shares their same wonderful sense of humor.

Look at Confessions. It's wonderfully absurd in the best tradition of Coen comedies. And Good Luck has the look of a film crafted by a master craftsman. The Coens couldn't make their films look that good until they had been directing films for over a decade.

He's competent. Wonderful and surprising.

He's a lot more than fodder for the tabloids.

He's the next Clint Eastwood, people. (Plus he's got an acting oscar, beat that.)

You forgot to add he comes from great acting stock as well, if you remember his family as I do. I've known the "Clooney's" to always be a very entertaining part of the industry from stage to screen & recording. His aunt is always remembered fondly at Christmas time in our home When we play "White Christmas".

reply

actually, that's for their next movie "A Serious Man" which is about growing up in predominantly Jewish St. Louis Park in the 60s. I read the script. It will be fantastic.
