Berkeley and Mason's realtonship?

Do you think they were just childhood friends? I had trouble imagining these people being friends at all. I mean sure if Mason was normal at first... I don't know, I had the idea they were foster brothers- anyone else get that?

Like maybe Berkeley's family did foster care and they took Mason in.

It seemed to me that they were probably very good childhood friends [spoilers] and Berkley also took on a big brother role after Mason's dad murdered his mom. Taking care of him afterwards with all the trauma that came with going through a tragic ordeal like that. And even humoring his delusions which he assumed correctly until the end were harmless. And unfortunately trying to get him help just a little too late. [/spoilers]

Um, whoops. My spoiler tag didn't work because autocorrect inserted "spoilers" when I typed "spoiler" and I unfortunately can't edit my post on my phone. I assume everyone reading these posts have seen the film already. But, um, yeah. Sorry?

Berkeley's character was not developed in depth, but I think he had a lot of problems of his own. He may not have had any real friends but Mason. We don't know how the friendship originally developed, but looking after Mason may have been the one constant good deed in an otherwise unhappy, lonely and cynical life.

This is what I got from it, Berkeley seemed like he had acquaintances but not people he really talked to. I think this is why he was friends with Mason, because he could talk to him and it gave him the sense of having a friend and gave him the sense of fulfillment of at the same time helping him out. I think that's why he seemed so upset at the end of the film after Mason had another breakdown, because if Mason was gone he really didn't have any friends either.
