Character Faults #Spoilers#

This film really suffered with very thin characters.

Darcy was an annoying, selfish, Woo girl. So what did Rachel and Dex love about her? And why did Kate Hudson accept the role of such a one dimensional character.

Marcus was very one dimensional too.

Rachel was very strait laced, except when she did the slutty dancing routines, which Gennifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson were both very good at incidentally, but they were totally out of character for Rachel. So were totally incredible.

Ashley Williams' Claire was a very thin role for her too.

And I know it's how rom-coms work, but why couldn't Rachel see that Ethan was in love with her, until he told her at the end? I think she should have ended up with him, as he never screwed her over.

This film had a fairly low rating on IMDB but it included a lot of actors who are normally very good, so I persevered. I can't really blame any of them, they did the best they could with what they were given.

Darcy in the books was a very different, well-developed character. I don't know why they did such a hatchet job on her character in the movie or why Emily Giffin was okay with this portrayal of Darcy, because it really affects the story. In the books, Darcy was still shallow, but she was also a fiercely loyal friend. She was witty, charming, drop dead gorgeous, and devoted to Rachel. The movie fails to show the good side of Darcy and while it focuses on Rachel's devotion to Darcy, it completely leaves out her loyalty to Rachel throughout the years and the depth of their friendship. For example, when Rachel was bullied by popular seniors in high school, Darcy put the bullies in their place. That was an important scene from the book that should have been included in the movie. In the book, I rooted for Darcy and at times even wondered why she was friends with Rachel, who is kind of a pessimistic dud; in the movie, Darcy is an insufferable, obnoxious b- with no redeeming qualities and it's inexplicable why any of the others are so enamored of her. Kate Hudson was seriously miscast and I almost hope they consider recasting the role for "Something Blue," which Emily says is being made.

Marcus is meant to be kind of a one dimensional character. He's a jerk who only cares about the other characters on a superficial level. That still kind of came through in the movie, but (like Darcy) they completely changed his character from what was written in the books. I did think Steve Howey did a good job with what he was given, though.

Rachel was the only character that stayed pretty much true to the books. Maybe Dex, too.

Claire was kind of pointless and the crush on Ethan was just silly and awkward.

Ethan was actually better in the movie than in the book and had a much more substantial role. John Krasinski stole the show.

Ethan was the only reason I gave this movie a 5 and not a 3 or a 4! He helped redeem the movie for me, Rachel and Darcy were ok but i still got irritated by their actions (I love Ginnifer and Kate so seeig them both in a movie I really didn't like was upsetting), for me Dex was the worst thing! I couldn't stand his character at all and I didn't understand why either of the women liked him so much, he was a wet fish who didn't stand up for himself or take responsibility for any of his actions!
