From a male perspective

I'm a guy, I watch the occasional rom-com out of interest and a silly need to "keep current" and I watched this..mostly because John Krasinski is in it, and discounting the fact that I'm a fan of his. I was sitting there the whole movie under the complete impression that he was going to wind up with the girl, instead they abandon his character 20 minutes before the movie is over and he gets no real closure at all, there's a cute little cutscene where we see him running from Kate Hudson, I've never read the books so I'm sure they elaborate more but really he was the only character I could even begin to empathize with, especially when he gets shot down, having been in that situation. It killed the movie for me to be honest.

Yeah, it is kind of weird how they left him hanging at the end, but it actually seemed pretty realistic for that to happen. Otherwise what was Rachel supposed to do, just forget everything and conveniently be in love with him too? It would have been too easy.

reply

It just seemed to me a more natural wrap up of the movie to find that guy who's been a badass by helping her through all this crap actually being the guy she was in love with, instead as it's been discussed on like 9 different threads, they kind of with with the Sleezeball's unite ending. But I am kind of curious how a sequel would play out, especially for that character.

The ovie basically had all selfish people...ofcourse except Ethan. And the female characters were all sluts...

reply

I thought it would have been cute if that one friend (the guy with the baby chipmunk story) turned out not to be such a total loser, but that was just a front and he really was a nice, cool guy once you get to know him. I also thought it would have been cute if Rachel and him actually hit it off and started a relationship together.

How silly of us, to think we could borrow a book from THE LIBRARY!!

reply

What ruined it for me was the total irony of the situation and how Rachael was a hypocrite in a way. Ethan bares his soul to her about how he always loved her and she sort of blows him off and pats him on the head or something.Meahwhile she wanted him to sympathize for her over how Dex was too good for her and was engaged to her best friend but she had an affair with him and wants him. So she should do the right thing and go for Ethan as he loved her, sort of the way she is saying she loved Dex but she thought he prob didn't love her in return.

reply

"Ethan bares his soul to her about how he always loved her..."

Everyone needs to stop saying that Ethan has always been "in love" with Rachel. Ethan basically says that what he feels for Rachel has more to do with comfort and convenience than true deep love, and that is exactly what Rachel had with Dex.

reply

Um..why were they sluts? Or do you just think that's appropriate name-calling for any woman you don't like?

Classy.

@ ptesinge
Well! there were 2 primary female characters in the movie....Darcy n Rachel.

SPOLIERS

Lets start with Darcy
Darcy is a gal who thinks she can just sleep aroun with nyone she likes, even if she is engaged. Another instance: When Darcy meets Dex for the first time n a restaurant, where Rachel was already present, she went on n asked Dex for a date even without havn a private conversation with Rachel, to know whether she is n nyway interested in Dex, but hell no!!!! she just goes on n asks Dex right at the moment....Just like a typical opportunist.

Now lets go with Rachel
Rachel is a gal who is madly in love with Dex, but ain't have the courage to tel it to nyone nor accept it, instead of that she sleeps with Dex, and Dex who is the *beep* guy I have ever came to know in the face of earth, who is for one moment, 'Rachel I Love u', then we see him confined to the spells of Darcy, standing confused....I mean WTF......the guy is a total jerk.....Another Instance: Ethan went on and told to her in the most direct way in which he could, that he is in love with her, but Rachel, so tactfully acted in that situation....where in she doesnt lose out Dex as well as keep Ethan in the hunt (This part has a lil bit of my assumption....so may not be true, but the rest stands tall).....

And u dont find ny of these traits as even a least bit slutty!!.....

reply

i couldn't agree with hillbillyfisherman more. i found my way here feeling the same exact way.

reply

So short answer is: Yes. You just call women sluts when you don't like them.

reply

Most of the male characters where sleeping around as well. So technically you should be saying everyone was a slut...not just the women.

reply

Be curious no more... Something Borrowed is based on a book by Emily Giffin. Its sequel Something Blue follows up with Darcy and Ethan's characters. The short scene in the credits is a teaser that they'll probably make that a movie too.

reply

I get why people are upset with the movie, but just because Ethan loved Rachel doesn't mean she loved him back. Was she supposed to magically just forget her feelings for Dex? That's just the way life is, it happens all the time. It is too easy and predictable for her to end up with "the friend". She just didn't feel that way about him. She loved Dex from the start to finish.

He might be a badass but not a hot badass, Dex was waAAAAAAAAAAAy HOTTER! Like no contest!

Go hard and show me that you really want me & maybe I'll give you the time of day...

reply

I love Ethan, but he was not perfect. He was just made to appear so so people think he's the 'better' person. He would be the man for me, though, out of the two. :)

Sleezeballs unite? Dex was not a sleezeball. I agree, he should have made a decision WAAAAAY earlier in the movie. He was unsure and insecure. But he DID make a decision in the end, and STUCK TO IT. Overall, he was just a regular guy. Which might have been his failing for most people.

Sometimes, I wish I was a ho.

reply

Then the movie would have been "Valentines Day" with Ashton Kutcher

reply

Personally i like krasinskis' character but think they should have left out the cliched "best friend is in love with her the whole time" bit. Im glad she ended up with dex.

reply

I thought that was the crazy chick chasing him in that little scene at the end, the one he was always trying to elude throughout the movie, not Darcy...?

Um...it's a movie

reply

I thought they should have ended the movie right after Rachel pours her heart out to Dex and he turns her down flat. Now that would have been how life really plays out.

reply

Ethan was the worst character out of the four. He was a big hypocrite, lying to that woman by telling her he was gay instead of being honest. Then he goes and shouts at Rachel for not being upfront, and tries to reveal their affair during that badminton match when it wasn't his place.

John was woefully miscast since he seemed so angry like he didn't want to be the movie. I don't blame him though since his character was a big waste.

reply

It's easier to understand if you just see all the characters except him as unsympathetic. He's the only likeable character in the whole movie. And of course, as they say, nice guys always finish last.

reply

Very well put, they do finish last

reply

I kind of have to agree with the previous poster that Ethan's sexing-up then compulsively lying to Ashley Williams' character makes him pretty unsympathetic, as well.

same here I came here as a male and left a female, jokes. ok bad one anyway, WHY is Kate Hudson making all these rom-coms and now two as a bride? It seems lazy and like she is just trying to take Jennifer Anistons boring rom com crown. I love The Office so wanted to watch this movie due to John K also. I felt for Rachel, being caught between a best friend you have had your whole life and the person you have wanted to be with for years. No one wants to go around hurting people unless they are psychos. I think Dex being the man in the situation should've not let it go on as long as he did even though it would've been a very hard situation for him also. You can love two people in different ways, I think Darcy should've asked her best friend if she had feelings for Dex the first time she sat down in the restaurant also as a matter of curiousity or courtesy or friendship. I did like Rachel as a person though and don't think her or Darcy were really slutty in my opinion. John K could've had a better role and hope he gets better movie roles than the comedy relief friend.

This movie blew. The only two characters who did anything cool were Claire and Marcus. Marcus started off as a moronic side-kick but then actually started to get his own slacker lines. Claire was just cute - and got the shaft even though she was kind of dumb.

I was glad everyone ended up the way they did. Ethan did butt in, but like a typical nice dude he is madly in love with Rachel, or whatnot, and does everything for her under the guise of friendship. Yay.

Dex had one of the few reasonable excuses - his dad basically said "If you end this wedding your mom will die." For anyone who has felt family pressures, that's rough.

One final thought...Dex stuck with Darcy even though she was that worthless? She must have been pretty talented.

Everybody likes the Shen.

The little part where Darcy is chasing him down at the end of the credits was foreshadowing the second book of the series, Something Blue. Depending on how well this film went they will probably try to make the second book into a movie as well.
SPOILERS!
The entire book is about how she moves to England to have her babies and she moves in with Ethan. She grows up a little bit and is actually a pretty good character, considering how awful she was in the first book. They end up falling in love with each other, so Ethan and Darcy end up together in the books. Even though he doesn't end up with someone in the first movie, the second book is all about him and Darcy in England (there's not much of Dex and Rachel at all). It will be interesting to see how they play this all out in the movie because in the books I didn't get the sense that they literally hated each other like I did in the movies. It was more of a playful, you are annoying and messing with my friend kind of thing.

reply

Female here, and I felt the exact same thing about Krazinski's character. I thought the way this character was treated sucked. He was always there for the lead girl, but was considered 2nd in love and also 2nd in friendship (because Darcy was first). They really needed closure with this character and give him his Happily Ever After ending too, but they totally dropped the ball. I guess I knew she was going to end up with Dex in the end, but I didn't find it particularly satisfying.

reply

His happily ever after comes in book 2 "Something Blue" and I hope they will make that movie, but it doesn't look like they will. :(
