Question about the ending...

Maybe someone who read the book can explain to me why the jacket being at his friends apartment made Darcy realize that Dex and Rachel were messing around.

Who Cares.

In the book it was his watch that Darcy had purchased. Rachel tried to say she bought it in London but Darcy read the inscription.

I think it made her realize he was there. The fact he wasn't totally destroyed by her breaking up with him made Darcy question if there was someone else. She put 2 and 2 together.

Apparently it was the same jacket that he was wearing when he broke off the engagement. When Rachel lied about when it got there and the fact that Dex was nowhere to be seen, even Darcy couyld figure it out.

Yeah, I got that part, but they were friends so I can't figure out why it would be out of the ordinary if his jacket was there.

I think she just had a gut feeling- why would Rachel lie to her unless there was something to hide? She had just told Rachel this really big secret about her pregnancy and there Rachel was, lying and saying Dex wasn't there, when his jacket (that she had seen him wearing only a few hours before) was lying there in Rachel's apartment. I think the book's way of doing it would've made more sense to the viewers as well. I read the book AFTER watching the movie.

During that part in the movie I remember thinking, "Why is Darcy suspicious about Dex's jacket?", but given the timeline of how soon she had just seen him wearing it- I brushed it off as mostly making sense. But in the book it went differently.

Maybe they didn't want Rachel/Dex to look bad for moving on so quickly, I don't know. But in the book, they were in the process of making out/almost sex after he told her the engagement was off, to the point that he was down to boxers I believe. That's when Darcy knocked on the door. Dex quickly hid in the bedroom closet holding his clothes. The watch he owned, however, was sitting on the nightstand by Rachel's bed- he had taken it off because he was planning on staying the night yada yada. I think it was also later in the day in the book (like, evening time). Darcy saw the watch when she was talking to Rachel in the bedroom (as opposed to the living room in the movie). She asked what Dex's watch was doing on Rachel's nightstand and Rachel tried to say she bought one like it in London. It was a special kind of watch and Darcy knew that, so she grabbed it real quick, saw an inscription inside that she had had made for Dex, something like, "To Dex with love. ~Darcy" and then she knew he was hiding somewhere in the apartment, probably unclothed if he felt comfortable enough to take his watch off.

Again, the movie changed it, I don't know why- maybe to make it less like Rachel/Dex moved on so quickly, I don't know. But the book's version made more sense than the movie on that aspect, I agree. Because I found myself wondering why Rachel didn't just say, "Dex came over here a little bit ago and told me your engagement was off." instead of claiming that Dex was never there that day. Besides, a tux (from a guy like Dex who probably owns 4 or 5 of them) I don't think would be all that distinguishable from any other one he owns, but that's just my opinion. The whole special watch thing was more believable IMO, so I understand where you're coming from on this aspect of the movie...

She basically just confessed that she cheated on him and was pregnant with another man's child in that apartment.... if that coat meant that Dex was there - THAT would be the problem. That's why she came back.
It wasn't until Rachael lied that Darcy put the pieces together to see the affair and then freaked out even more.

Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And whatever you do, don't Blink. 🏦
