that's funny reading that some think this is a Buffy rip off. If the writer had this idea since he was a kid, he probably got it here:

And probably Joss Whedon too. But that's as far back as my IMDB-fu goes. Not that that is ripping off, inspiration has to come from somewhere.

I remember a Star Trek TNG episode with a strikingly similar storyline as well.

it's really not all that surprising; amnesia is a common idea in many, MANY storylines.
i dont think the writer/director made this movie with the purpose of doing a buffy storyline, but i DO think that he's definately a fan.
