Where did the 'Shadow Puppet' come from again?

OK, I think I understood that imposter Jack/Dr. Mangum (not sure if I spelled his name right) was trying to help people by wiping out selective parts of their memory, but was the Shadow Puppet monster ever explained? Where did it come from and why was it in this psychiatric institution?

IIRC, when they tried "reseting" someone who was brain dead with the memory erasing machine, that beast appeared. I didn't listen too much, since the movie was pretty silly, but I think that I'm right about this. :)=

It was something like all the "erased" memories became the beast.

that part was really cheesy and destroyed pretty much the whole thing.
until they explained this, i thought this movie was very exciting. but a smokey monster out of erased memories? c'mon...

Jack said that when the machine didn't find the comatose guy's brain it sucked out his soul or something like that... I found this explanation to be pretty sad and I agree with bullett-time... until the explanation was given I thought the movie was pretty decent.

It's sad, because a few small script and direction changes could've made this a pretty good movie. I thought the acting was pretty good for the most part... but such a ludicrous explanation really killed it for me.

I think what they were trying to say was when they tried to wipe someone who was brain dead the machine couldn't find anything to wipe so went for the human soul, thus the monster was born, bad conclusion but a so so movie!
