A wasted cool concept

I have to admit, I liked the first part of the movie a lot despite being similar to Cube. It had an almost Silent Hill vibe to it, in terms of atmosphere. Then the Shadow thing came out and I was thinking, "Hey, this is pretty neat, it's kind of like the entity from The Darkness in movie form." This combined with the bone "wing" style shadow flicker on the super model had the possibility for greatness.

Then, unfortunately, they turned it into a cloud with a silly face on it. Why? Why, God, would you do that? If you kept it confined to walls and twisting object shadows into things that could leap, from the darkness, into a 3rd dimension and possessed entities only recognizable by their distorted shadows, you could have had a horror enemy classic.

Simply changing the nature into the flying cloud and worse yet, personifying it with the face, wrecked everything the monster could have been. What's ironic is by not doing that, you'd probably /saved/ effects budget.
