What's with that annoying flickering screen zoom thing

I don't even know what you call it but every time she was supposed to be being watched they kept doing this pseudo-David Lynch thing with the jumbled voices and flickering screen. I guess it's supposed to be disorienting but to me it's just gay and annoying. I've noticed this "trick" in a few other films, too. Whoever thought this was cool...it's not. It's actually really lame and distracting. Otherwise this was a decent little slasher.
