Kim's accent

Why don't they just cast an Irish actress or have the character be American?

reply

First off, Kim's English and Canadian, but I take your point. These kind of casting decisions almost always have to do with securing the funding for a picture. They need a "name" in order for a particular studio to agree to bankroll a film, thinking it will guarentee a certain amount of money at the boxoffice. Unfortunately this means it's usually an American (or at least someone perceived as American) shoehorned into a role they can't pull off.

I don't see why her character couldn't have been American. Would it be so unbelievable that an Irish businessman/millionaire could marry an American woman?

I watched this movie last night and I loved it... but! it was very dissapointing the fact that it was an 18! There was no nudity so I wonder why it was a certificate 18??? When I got to the cinema it was just me and my hubby then 3 more men came on their own company! Probably thinking Kim would do a nice sex scene... not! It looks as if she doesn't do the nudity in England, what's that all about? I like her as an actress but she let audiences down... some men just walked out! a good tasty nude scene would have kept the men probably until the end of the movie. Im not talking trashy Basic Insticts here but something simple. Accent was great but I do prefer her American one.

This is a movie to be watched by anyone, specially teenagers. A 15 certificate would have put more bums in cinema seats. Also the time this movie is released is not a good one. With Pirates and Fantastic 4 coming out soon not many people will want to watch Tiger's.

It's a shame because I know the amoount of time and work that goes into making a movie and I hope it does really well too... With the lottery's money maybe the producers are not too bothered what happens anyway? I hope they change the certificate so a lot more people can appreciate a proper movie, excellent acted and perfectly directed... oh yes ... well written too and the lighting awesome and thanks to my mom too!

I agree completely about casting actors who actually have the right accent for a film. IT's not like Kim Cattrall is a huge film star. I know people say anyone can play a part with an accent – "it's called ACTING" – is the most common response, but a lousy accent can really distract from the story.

Actors who can't pull off an accent are no benefit to a film, regardless of who they are. Maybe Cate Blanchett can do it, and Meryl Streep before her, but very few actors can do a seamless accent and be believable.

There were times I honestly thought they did a voice-over on her. Sounded terrible...

At least she smuggled peanuts for a brief part of the film.

LOL at Kim, since Brendan showed more skin than she did with that nip slip and bare back of his BUT maybe it earned an "18" because of the near-rape? (she DID fight at first) or maybe the overdose by Connor?

I actually thought her accent wasn't that bad... Especially when compared to say Julia Roberts in "Michael Collins", Jonathan Pryce in "Ronin" or everybody in "Ordinary Decent Criminal"..

Watched it on RTE last night, and have to say her accent was not bad at all. In fact my estimation of her as an actor grew. (That's not all that grew ! Ahem)

You are so right. Her accent goes in and out, sometimes American, sometimes Canadian, sometimes half hearted british, occassionally Irish and most often, Swedish.

reply

her accent never sounds Irish in it, it sounds like what Hollywood thinks an Irish accent is, which is Id imagine what a lepracaun would talk like. No1 in Ireland has an accent like it so I dunno where all these people thinkin its ok are from
