**SPOILER**How Francois judges his father

In the last scene, adult Francois tells his father, Maxim, that he is guilty in the dog's death but in nothing else. At first I thought this was wrong: Maxim's obsession with Tania was so clear to Hannah that she lost all hope and did what she did. Maxim's and Tania's mutual attraction was so strong that in spite of their better wishes, anyone getting in the way of that passion was toast. Maxim was guilty of provoking Hannah to do what she did.

Now I'm not so sure. Maxim and Tania never gave in to their mutual attraction until after it seemed Hannah was out of the picture. Do you think, if Hannah hadn't made the choice she did, Maxim and Tania would have fulfilled her fears?

"Maxim was guilty of provoking Hannah to do what she did."

There may be guilt in his behavior as a husband, but what lead to their deaths was the Nazi policy of killing Jews for being Jews. That's what I assumed Francois meant: It's only the dog's *death* that he is guilty of. Whatever guilt one can ascribe to an unfaithful husband, it pales rather profoundly in comparison to Nazi crimes.

It's also hard to extract Hannah's behavior from the circumstances they find themselves in as Jews under Nazi occupation. As hurt as she may have been in any circumstance, in other normal (non-Nazi) circumstances, would Maxim's unfaithfulness have unhinged (to use your words from another thread) her to *such* an extreme?

I think Tania only relented when she knew Maxim's wife might not come back.

I didn't think she acted like she was attracted to him until the scene by the river. She could always see he wanted her but she seemed so disdainful of him, I was surprised when she gave in.

/i think she just couldn't be bothered anymore.

How can ANYONE really believe that this so called "father " and "husband" was only at fault in the dogs demise...? His, egotistical, selfish, disloyal, and unloving behaviors had a HUGE hand in what happened....I think if this man had been born in nazi germany, and was a gentile, he would have been FIRST in line to sign up to the party. He had a huge ego, was obsessed with physical prowess, selfish.........he would ave made the perfect SS man.......

I too find it hard to believe that some act as if it was Hannah's fault, the guy was about to dump her and her stupid sister in law would have went along with it.

The sister in law had a husband who was in a concentration camp and she should have been wondering and being concerned for him but she could hardly care at all about his plight, she and Francois were two of a kind.
